Question Meaning of the 5 Bugles

    Hi

A year or so ago either on this website for the FE one there was a nice article from a Chief in the mid-west that gave a nice definition of what it means to be chief and a placed a meaning on each of the five bugles. Does anyone have that ???

I always thought that it meant that they had lost all common sense. You know, the old saying about the number of bugles in relation to a guys ability to think clearly.

Just kidding, I don't want all of you chiefs out there blacklisting me forever.

1 Bugle (Ok, everyone knows they're actually Speaking Trumpets, right?) indicates the Lieutenant knows to keep on focus on accomplish the job.

2 Straight Bugles...well, that just means he has more stiffness when faced with adversity and still perservers to get the job done.

Chiefs get crossed bugles, 'cause they're outside running around like a chicken with their head cut off pointing in all directions, while the Captains & Lieutenants mostly ignore the white-hatted wonders and get the job done.

They are not bugles...they are plungers for all the "crap" one has to deal with.

    My Department's plunger ranks...

1 plunger, Lieutenant: deals with company level "crap".

2 plungers, Captain: deals with company level crap plus supervises the Lieutenants, henceforth more "crap".

3 plungers, Deputy Chief: deals with the "crap" that comes down from the corner office and the "crap" that comes up from the Captain's and Lieutenants.

5 plungers, Chief: deals with "crap" from City Hall, John Q. Public. the Deputies, Captains and Lieutenants.

Each level of "crap" dealt with is also compensated accordingly, although there are some days that you deal with enough "crap" to shut down a wastewater treatment plant and they couldn't pay you enough!

weruj1.....Leave it to you to dig up old "dirt."

I think this would be an interesting subject to research. Would be interesting to know the thought behind these bugles when Ben Franklin started the fire department....... Where is our minister of information????? Oh Ed........where are you????
