JERSEY CITY, NJ:
SCORES INJURED IN DOWNTOWN HIGH-RISE

Saturday morning, April 9, 2005, dawned a beautiful spring day, a welcome respite from the gray, soggy mornings of the past few days. Residents of Jersey City's Metropolis Towers, however, would remember this day for another reason. Originally constructed in the mid 1960's, the complex was the first high rise buildings of the modern era built in the Downtown district of the city. The development was known as the Gregory Park Apartments, named after an early Jersey City mayor, and consisted of three 21 story apartment buildings. The complex has had its share of problems over the years, including bankruptcies, and a problematic conversion to a cooperative apartment.

Today's problem was a fire of potentially catastrophic proportions originating in Apartment 15I of Building II with a street address of 270 Henderson St. Box 127 was transmitted at 0850 hours. First Battalion companies know the complex well, having responded to the buildings frequently for the usual mix of alarm activations, unattended cooking and compactor fires. As units took their usual positions, Eng. Co. 2 was greeted in the lobby by several excited residents reporting a fire on the 18th and 20th floors. Capt. John Costanza advised that Eng. Co. 2 was going up to investigate and Eng. Co. 6 should assume lobby command.

Arriving on the 18th floor, Eng. Co. 2 encountered a heavy smoke condition, but no fire. Smoke was pushing out of all the HVAC vents and a steady flow of residents were exiting their apartments and were directed to the stairwells. Several conflicting reports from residents did not provide a clue as to the exact location of the fire. However, as Rescue Co. 1 approached the scene, Capt. Victor Petrucelli radioed that he spotted a person on a balcony with heavy smoke over the person's head on the 15th floor.

Battalion 1, Chief James Pierro, ordered a Working Fire and a 2nd Alarm at 0858 hours. Companies redirected to the 15th floor confirmed that the fire was on that level and began connecting their high rise packs to the standpipe system. The initial attack was hampered by low water pressure, but that situation was alleviated by Engine Companies 2 and 8 feeding the siamese connections at street level. However, as units pushed into the fire apartment, the elevators shut down, necessitating help to walk up to the upper floors. Batt. Chief Pierro struck a 3rd Alarm with orders for incoming units to search the floors above the fire and remove all occupants.

Fire was confined to the apartment of origin, but smoke and water damage on adjoining floors was extensive. The occupant on the 15th floor balcony was a female resident of the apartment of origin, who awoke to find her living room in flames and fled to the balcony. Fire Fighters reached the floor above and reassured her until she was removed via the interior. Several other occupants required assistance in fleeing the building. The operation was both time-consuming and exhausting, therefore Acting Deputy Chief Kenneth Drennan special called 2 engines, 2 trucks and 2 battalion chiefs above the 3rd Alarm. The fire was brought under control by 1045 hours.

A total of 5 Fire Fighters and 15 residents were treated and transported to the Jersey City Medical Center, including one fire fighter removed from the fifth floor by Tower Ladder 4's bucket. Another 20 residents were treated at the scene. The Gong Club turned out in force with 11 members reporting for duty. Car 26 was chauffeured by Member Ken Sikora, visiting for the weekend with his father, Rich, from their native Buffalo, no doubt in search of warmer weather! The Club deployed its high rise cart, bring bottled water, Gatorade, cups, cookies and snack cakes into the lobby where a rehab and EMS area was established.

Response was as follows:

Helping Our Own

"firefighter helping firefighter"

There are literally thousands of fire departments, nationwide, that are struggling to keep their doors open on a shoestring budget. Many don't have personal protective clothing, breathing apparatus, or even helmets to protect these courageous firefighters. Some are fighting structure fires in blue jeans and sweatshirts, and some of the poorer departments don't even have fire engines, they have to fight structure fires with a brush truck. That is unacceptable when larger departments are destroying good usable equipment, on a daily basis, which could be donated to these needy departments.
