Just curious... how scientific of a poll are you hoping this will be? I doubt a lot of career firefighters come to this volunteer forum. Won't that skew your results?

We have a fulltime Chief officer, 3 fulltime firefighters that each work a 24 hour shuift (so there is one paid firefighter on 24/7) and we have a datime weekday slot (8-5) that is filled from a pool of qualified volunteers. We are still a primarily volunteer department.

Some of us like to see what goes on in the world of volunteers as well.

We are 100% career, but I am interested in what is happening in the whole world of firefighting.

I was hoping someone would post this, figured it would be about a few hours before someone did lol. But We're Supposed to be paid on any working call at the NLDC(New Lisbon Developmental Center) which we cover for the state.

Good question. My department has a full time Chief, and the rest of us are "paid-by-the-call". The rest of the officers received a small salary as well as call pay. The city considers us to be "part time" employees, but I have to wonder how we can be truly "part-time" if we have no set hours and are only working when we are called out. For that reason, I feel more like a "volunteer" than I do a "part-time" employee. My reasoning is that I volunteer to come to work when I am available to. If I am at my regular job or out of the response area, I am not "required" to respond, and I am prohibited from responding if I am not fit for duty (i.e. having consumed an adult beverage).

The real problem is that we have a minimum performance requirement of 25% attendance at fire calls. If I could "schedule" the fires around my schedule, that wouldn't be to hard to accomplish. With fire calls down, it is often hard to be lucky enough to be around when one out of four calls come in....

Ours considers us to be "unpaid" employees.
