JERSEY CITY, NJ
NUMEROUS CALLS - CLOSE CALL!

The pre-dawn silence of a Sunday morning in Jersey City's West Bergen neighborhood was abruptly shattered on April 17, 2005 by a roaring three alarm fire that left six families homeless and two fire fighters injured.

Although most residents were sound asleep, Group A of the Jersey City Fire Department had been on the run all day Saturday into the wee hours of Sunday morning. Working fires at 10 Bidwell Ave. and 85 Paterson St. plus a car fire that singed the exterior of two buildings on Neptune Ave. were the highlights of the tour so far, along with the usual gamut of still and box alarms.

At 0429 hours, Box 769 was transmitted for a reported fire at 387 Union St. As the box went out over the air, numerous calls were pouring into the Fire Dispatch Center, heralding another job for Group A this tour. This writer, residing at 289 Union St., made a quick check of the rear and side windows to be certain that the calls weren't off by a hundred. Nothing showing there, thankfully, but a look to the west showed plenty! A towering column of ugly black smoke was in the night sky already! Batt. 4, Batt. Chief Michael O'Reilly spotted it as well and reported heavy smoke in the area while he was en route. Chief O'Reilly arrived a few seconds later and reported "3 story frame heavily involved in the rear; transmit a 2nd Alarm!". Responding in from the rear, the undersigned looked down the alley of 58 Williams Ave. and saw three floors of fire and not a rig in sight yet. Two engine companies on the 2nd Alarm were assigned to tackle the fire from the rear.

Meanwhile, on the Union St. side., companies aggressively pushed into the stairwell and up to the third floor. The correct address of the fire building was 389 Union St., a three story frame, six family occupied multiple dwelling. Given the time of day and the volume of fire, everyone feared that there may be occupants trapped by the raging inferno. Miraculously, in part thanks to an off duty probie fire fighter who lives on the block, all residents were roused out of their beds and escaped, albeit with the clothes on their backs! Fire rapidly extended into the cockloft and a portion of the top floor ceiling crashed into the 3rd and 2nd floor landings. Batt. Chief O'Reilly ordered a 3rd Alarm as Division 1, Deputy Chief William Sinnott arrived and took command. Deputy Chief Sinnott ordered the building evacuated and an accountability roll call. Units backed out of the building as Ladder Co. 11 commenced ladder pipe operations and streams from several big lines were directed into building front and rear.

The large tenement put up quite a fight until 0615 hours when the fire was declared under control. A significant portion of the roof collapsed as well as a portion of the 3rd floor into the 2nd floor. However, the fire was held to the building of origin with no extension to any exposures. Tower Ladder 4 eventually swapped positions with Ladder Co. 11 to remove precarious charred structural members and sections of the building's siding. The Jersey City Building Dept. was notified to conduct an inspection of the integrity of the building.

Two fire fighters were removed to the Jersey City Medical Center for minor injuries. Car 26, the Gong Club canteen, operated for nearly six hours. An earlier box in the city's Greenville section occupied Batt. 2 and Lad. Co. 8, normally assigned on the first alarm for this box.

LOS ANGELES, CA:
MAJOR EMERGENCY STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Sunday, April 17, 2005, at 0701 hours (7:01 A.M. P.S.T.), sixteen companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, the Fire Chief, one Deputy Chief, one Assistant Chief Officer Command Team, five Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, three LAFD Rescue Ambulances, Arson Investigators, Building & Safety, and other Fire Department resources, under the direction of Assistant Chief Curtis James, responded to a Major Emergency Structure Fire at 19235 West Ventura Boulevard in the Tarzana area. First units on the scene reported a one-story strip mall with heavy smoke showing from one unit. During the initial aggressive fire attack by Firefighters, they reported heavy fire through the roof with a portion of the roof collapsed ahead of them from the weight of an air conditioning unit. Continuing their aggressive attack on the fire with handlines that was now well ventilated, Firefighters confined the fire to “One on One Personal Fitness” a 6,000 square feet fitness gym, and extinguished the fire in one hour and nine minutes. Several of the other eight occupancies sustained smoke damage but no fire damage. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is listed as electrical. Fire damage is estimated at $500,000. ($300,000 structure and $200,00 contents)

LOS ANGELES, CA:
HAZMAT:

On Sunday, April 17, 2005, at 1752 hours (5:52 P.M. P.S.T.) six companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one Battalion Officer Command Team, one Battalion EMS Supervisor, one Hazmat Squad, one Foam Tender, three LAFD Rescue Ambulances, Long Beach FD, LA County FD, CHP, LAPD, and several LA City Agencies under the direction of Battalion Commander Louis Roupoli, responded to a Hazardous Materials Incident at 223rd Street and Wardlow at the on-ramp to the 405 Freeway in the Wilmington area. First unit on the scene reported that the trailer of a tank truck (Cox Petroleum) had over turned while attempting to negotiate a turn to enter onto the on-ramp of the 405 Freeway. The trailer contained approximately 5,000 gallons of gasoline and approximately 100 gallons of the product had leak from the trailer. When the spilled product was contained and foamed and the trailer was stabilized and grounded, Firefighters drilled holes in the trailer and inserted a “stinger” and off loaded the product into a vacum truck. A heavy-duty tow truck uprighted the trailer and the incident was turned over to the Los Angeles Police Department for investigation.
