    Default Challenges ..... Part 1

What is your greatest PERSONAL challenege as a firefighter?
Motivating Yourself? Keeping your skills up? Keeping Focused ?? Etc. Etc ?????

For me it's keeping motivated when dealing with a string of BS calls. I have to fight the feeling sometimes that our services are abused and remember, that to them it's an emergency.

    Physical Fitness.

Since we are a tiny VFD with very low call volume, skills maintenance is up there as well. We do train religiously though to try to compensate as much as possible.

We don't have the problem with BS calls, because we get so few, the boys welcome anything to keep them interested.

My greatest challenge is getting family and friends to understand the importance of what I/we do. Understanding that plans may be postponed for emergencies, dinner may be late, sleep time may not be had.
If all friends/family understood the importance of what we do, in the way that we understand, life would have less stress.

I have plenty of motivation, I'm in good shape, and train regularly. Another challengs I have is being up all night, somtimes two nights in a row, and still getting up for work after 2 hours of sleep or NO sleep.

Having time to do all that I feel I need to do around the station...Trying to get quite a few changes implemented and I feel like slamming my head off a brick wall would have just as much effect as my efforts...so staying motivated and not getting burnt out is a challenge as well.

I would have to second physical fitness.

I know I am not in the best shape I can be, carrying some extra pounds, probably could lose 10-15 easy. I know I'm strong and have decent CV but I want to be able to have all the power inside of me ready when I absolutely need it. Now that spring has sprung I am planning on running 3 nights a week.

Trying not to burn myself out. I wear too many hats on my department (My own fault). After building 2 trucks in a row and cmpleting the 2005 grant application I told my fellow firefighters and board members that I'll just be making calls, training and board meetings for a while. No more "extra stuff" for a while.

    Keeping my jets cooled.

I have strong opinions and I feel confident in my abilities and judgement most of the time. At the same time I am not afraid to say "I don't know how to do that" and ask for help, so I am reasonably sure I am not a bullhead.

Anyway, I take the initiative to do stuff that tends to wrankle some others in the department even when the stuff needed doing and no one else would or could do it. I need better balance on when to just shut up and decide which battles to not fight.

The BS calls are a challenge. Like the one we had this morning at 0530. Elderly lady fell out of bed. Not injured, but couldnt get up. 3rd time in 4 days we have responded there for the same thing

But the biggest challenge for me is staying in shape. Its not as easy at 40 as it was at 30, now I have to work at it.

Good to see folks replying. I posted these with the intention of having folks take a minute and think about what challenges them, and hopefully, thinking about what they can do to deal with the challenges.

Someone mentioned earlier of keeping the basics down. I'm on a small department with only a couple real structure fires a year so keeping up to speed on new techniques in other areas as well as remembering the basics of firefighting.
