Firefighter Killed Following Freak Accident
April 26, 2005 — It is being called a freak accident. A flash-fire onboard a trash truck last week has now claimed the life of a beloved Upper Chichester volunteer firefighter.
Black bunting is draped around the firehouse as a reminder that the volunteers are all in mourning. A veteran firefighter is gone, ironically. A flash fire on his other fulltime job is the cause.
His smile will never be forgotten and his gear will never again be moved. Steve Powers, affectionately called "Tater" around the firehouse was a 26-year veteran, a teacher, a mentor, and friend to many volunteers.
And firefighters say making matters worse, Powers was the blood brother of their chief.
Action News was there moments after a flash fire in the back of a trash truck sent Powers to a hospital where he later died. Powers, a township employee, was apparently standing on the back of the truck when the fire erupted. Investigators sifted through the trash fearing an improperly discarded propane tank may have exploded. None was found, but officials say an aerosol can may have sparked the flame.
Volunteers will wear Tater's name on their helmets now in honor of the fallen firefighter who died in what's being called a freak accident.
Hundreds, if not thousands of area firefighters are expected to attend for Powers' funeral Friday. He leaves behind a wife and three children.

RIP, Brother.......
Dave, it sounds like this is not a Fire Department LODD...... It sounds like he was on duty for the trash collection, not the FD...... Not that it matters, since we still lost another Brother....

original story from BIlly Gee @ firefighterclosecalls.com
PA FF Inj-Expl. / Ohio App. Crash / NY Update
April 18, 2005

Hey....
We have reports that firefighters from Boothwyn, PA responded to some sort of a trash truck explosion/fire today. All crew members of the town's trash truck crew are also volunteer firefighters. A homeowner decided to put a propane tank in their garbage-and it was unknowingly collected... and when they compressed it, it exploded. Although not "on duty" as a firefighter, the trash truck operator, who is a firefighter, is in very serious condition. More when we have it... more details available at:

According to news reports the truck was dumped, and the pile sifted through, NO propane tanks were found. The investigators are leaning towards an aresol(sp?) can. I saw the report on WPVI ch.6. www.wpvi.com .
Doesn't make it suck any less. prayers and condolences to all involved.
