    Default Understanding Oral Information

Over the last few years, many candidates have asked us what can be done to increase their examination score on this difficult part of the examination known as “Understanding Oral Information.” This type of examination is becoming more commonplace. In this type of examination, you cannot take any notes and must remember everything that is being orally read to you. You then proceed to answer 20 questions on the material that was presented to you orally. Candidates are getting killed on this type of examination. Without practice, the average score is between 13-14 correct out of 20 questions. With competition for the job of a firefighter being extremely tough, one or two questions will mean the difference of you becoming a firefighter or not.

Have someone read you the passage below and then proceed to answers the questions after the passage. You are not to take any notes while the passage is read to you.

ORAL COMPREHENSION PASSAGE – FIRE TRAINING ACADEMY

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, good morning new recruits. Today, we would like to welcome you to our Fire Training Academy. We would also like to congratulate you on the hard work and effort you put into becoming a firefighter. We realize the many hours of sacrifice that you gave and the many hours your family sacrificed. You should also be appreciative of them. You have successfully scored in the top percentile over your competition. The exam was tough; the written test, believe me, was no cakewalk. The oral board interview, as you well know, was very high pressure. The physical agility exam was also quite competitive since it was worth 50% of your examination score.

During your first week of training, you will be required to fill out numerous forms the city requires of its employees. During your first day at the Academy, you are to report to Lt. Grant Cruxton, on the third floor of the Academy, room 345. With this officer, you will complete your medical and insurance forms. You will also be required to fill out form 185, an emergency notification card. This card is used in case anything should happen to you while at the Academy or during your employment as a firefighter. You are required to give us at least 3 names and phone numbers of individuals you would like us to contact in case of emergency.

Your hours at the Academy will be from 0700 to 1700, Monday through Friday for a total of 10 weeks. Two of those weeks you will ride with a fire company within our department. At the Academy, you will have a supervising officer. If your last name begins with the letters A-L, your supervising officer will be Capt. Robinson. If your last name begins with the letters M-S, your supervising officer will be Capt. Thomas. If your last name begins with the letters T-Z, your supervising officer will be Capt. Norman.

During the first week of training, those individuals under the supervision of Capt. Robinson will be required to upkeep the outside grounds during lunch. For those under the supervision of Capt. Thomas, your responsibilities will be to clean all ladders and make sure the hose tower is clean. For those under the supervision of Capt. Norman, upkeep of all air masks and forcible entry tools.

On Wednesday, those under the supervision of Capt. Norman will report to the medical office to upgrade your medical reports. On Thursday, those under the supervision of Capt. Thomas, from 0900 to 1100, will be meeting with the benefits officer. On Friday, from 1300 to 1500, those under the supervision of Capt. Robinson will meet with the clothing officer to size you up for your firefighting fatigues.

As a probationary firefighter, you will be on probation for a period of 9 months upon graduation from the Academy. During that time, you will be required to submit weekly probation evaluation forms that your superior officer has filled out. These forms will be due every Friday. During your 9-month probationary period, those under the supervision of Capt. Norman will be assigned to ladder companies. Those under the supervision of Capt. Robinson will be assigned to rescue squads. Those under the supervision of Capt. Thomas will be assigned to engine companies.

During this 9 month period, you will be required to know every aspect of your job. It is very important that you maintain a professional and teamwork atmosphere with your peers. Insubordination will not be tolerated in this department. If during your probation period you are insubordinate 2 or more times, you will be dismissed as a firefighter.

During your fourth month as a probationary firefighter after graduating from the Academy, you will be required to report to room 374 of the medical bureau for a complete physical. The time for these physicals will be as follows: last name begins with A-M report from 0900 to 1030; last name begins with N-Z report from 1300 to 1530 hours. During this time, you will receive a stress test, hearing test, vision test, and medical monitoring test.
