Name of pedestrian killed still unknown

CHARLOTTE HARBOR -- The Florida Highway Florida Patrol has not released the name of a man killed Monday night when a car struck him as he crossed U.S. 41.

According to an FHP report, the man was crossing U.S. 41 near Gale Street shortly before 9 p.m. A 1995 Ford driven by Nancy Roggemann, 18, of Fort Myers, was traveling south on 41 in the outside lane, approaching the intersection.

Because there were no crosswalks or streetlights, Roggemann couldn't see the man and struck him on the right side, propelling him onto the hood of the Ford.

Rescue workers transported the man to Fawcett Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said Dee Hawkins, Charlotte County Fire & EMS spokeswoman.

Witnesses at the scene said the man appeared to be talking on a cellular phone as he crossed the road.

Roggemann and her passenger, Cody McDonald, 17, also of Fort Myers, were not hurt. Both were wearing seat belts, the report states.

No charges will be filed in the accident, according to the FHP.
