SEBRING - A local firefighter with the Florida Division of Forestry was honored by Gov. Jeb Bush's Cabinet after receiving an award from the Florida State Firefighters' Association.
Franks Gibbs, a 16-year veteran of the Sebring office of the Division of Forestry, was named the 2004 Forestry Firefighter of the Year by the association. Gibbs also was honored at a ceremony in Tallahassee by the governor and his Cabinet, including Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher, who also is state fire marshal.

``These men and women are role models, but all who answer the call to serve and protect the public are heroes,'' Gallagher said.

Gibbs, 38, who lives in Lake Placid, said he joined the agency in 1988 in Okeechobee and two years later moved to the Sebring office.

``I am really honored by this award,'' he said. ``It is a once in a lifetime thing.''
