A former full-time firefighter with Citrus County was arrested early Tuesday on a charge of driving under the influence.

William M. Cannella, 22, of Inverness was stopped near U.S. 41 S and County Road 480 south of Floral City because he was driving erratically, according to an arrest report. A breath test later showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.163 percent, the report said.

A blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent is the threshold at which Florida law presumes a person is unable to safely drive a motor vehicle.

Law officers booked Cannella into the Citrus County jail, where bail was set at $500. He posted bail and was released.

A fire rescue spokesman said Cannella resigned from his job Tuesday morning. A phone message left at Cannella's home Tuesday was not returned.
