MANGONIA PARK A 44-year-old man died Monday night, apparently the victim of a small brush fire, the Sheriff's Office said.

The man, whose identity was not released pending notification of next of kin, was found dead after a brush fire was extinguished in the 5300 block of East Avenue, north of 45th Street, Palm Beach County Sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Andrews said.

The victim's burned body was found in a wooded area on the west side of East Avenue by West Palm Beach Fire-Rescue. A passerby who noticed smoke called Fire-Rescue, Andrews said.

Fire-Rescue got the call about 6:54 p.m., dispatch records show. The fire was put out about 7:03 p.m.

A group of homeless people live in the wooded area, Andrews said. The man appeared to be homeless.

West Palm Beach Fire-Rescue and the Sheriff's Office arson and homicide unit are investigating. The cause of the fire was still under investigation Monday night, but Andrews said the fire occurred in a relatively small area around the victim.

Preliminary investigation indicated the man died as a result of the fire, Andrews said.

A more complete report will not be available until results are back from the fire investigation and an autopsy, Andrews said.
