Post Former firefighter will stand trial

Former firefighter competent for trial, prosecutor says
    memtv
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A former firefighter is competent to stand
trial for the slayings of his wife and three other people after
nearly three years in a mental institution, a prosecutor said.
Frederick Williams, 46, was committed to the Middle Tennessee
Mental Health Institute in July 2002 after being diagnosed as
depressed, psychotic and delusional. But special prosecutor Terry
Harris said in Criminal Court on Monday that doctors believe
Williams has improved, The Commercial Appeal newspaper reported.
Harris, a former state prosecutor and now a U.S. attorney, said
psychiatrists believe Williams can assist in his defense and
understands the charges against him. Doctors say Williams still
needs hospitalization in a secure facility to remain competent but
the court can continue with criminal charges against him.
Williams is accused of going on a rampage on March 8, 2000, when
he shot and killed his wife, Stacey Williams, at their Memphis home
and set it on fire. When emergency crews arrived, Williams also
shot and killed firefighters William Blakemore and Javier Lerma,
and shot deputy Rupert Peete Jr. in his squad car.
Attorney Arthur Quinn said defense psychiatrists will examine
Williams and issue their own findings.
Judge Arthur Bennett scheduled a competency hearing for July 6,
where he will consider testimony from psychiatrists and determine
if Williams should go on trial.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the case.
Williams was scheduled to be tried in June 2002 but doctors said
his mental condition had deteriorated after two years in jail.

    Unhappy

What is bad, he killed members of his own department. If his attorney is good and uses the physiological test, he will get the charge reduce from murder to manslaughter. He will probably have to pull some time in prison.

This will not bring back the ones that he shot as they arrived on the scene.

Too bad that the others deputies or police didnít take him out when they had the chance!

Yea, I'm sure they probably regret it, too. That man is a monster.
