JERSEY CITY, NJ: 4-4 665 06/03/05

LUCK RUNS OUT ON SUMMIT AVE.

Row frame dwellings; a fire fighter's nightmare; plenty of wood, void spaces, common cocklofts, narrow hallways and tight rooms; a recipe for disaster in anyone's book. Add overhead wires, a few trees front and back and then place this entire hornets' nest on a hill and you have the picture that often confronts Jersey City Fire Fighters.

During the afternoon of October 8, 1999, a fire broke out in such construction at 31A Summit Ave. Group D was on duty that sunny Friday afternoon and Deputy Chief Thomas Kearney quickly transmitted a 2nd Alarm to cut off the fire before it raced down a row of 7 frame dwellings. Lines were stretched into several exposures, holes cut in the roof, ceilings pulled and the row was saved! Some damage occurred in either exposure, but the damages were repaired and the homes occupied once again.

Luck would not be on the side of Summit Avenue's residents this morning, however! June 3, 2005, once again a Friday and once again Group D was on duty. Once again, fire broke out at 31 A Summit Ave., but the fire was anything but minimal this time! At 0419 hours, numerous calls were received at Jersey City Fire Dispatch indicating a working fire was in progress at this location. Box 665 and the Working Fire assignment were transmitted simultaneously. Squad 4 spotted a large column of smoke in the sky as they turned out and could see fire engulfing the rear of the 2 story row dwelling as they approached. Capt. Robert Keating transmitted a 2nd Alarm upon arrival. To complicate matters, Squad 4's regular apparatus was out of service and the company was riding a spare without a pump! Eng. Co. 10 had the first line on the fire, but the heavy volume of fire was already into both exposures. Unlike the first episode here, Deputy Chief Kearney was off this tour, with Acting Deputy Chief Peter Gasiorowski in command. Chief Gasiorowski sized up the situation and immediately transmitted a 3rd Alarm.

Engine Companies 2 and 17 drew the assignment to attack the fire from the rear on Prescott St. This proved to be a formidable task, requiring a stretch of 2 1/2" line down a driveway, through a back yard, up onto a garage roof and then down into the rear yard of the fire building. Even the trees were aflame in the rear when Eng. Co. 17 started water!

Meanwhile Tower Ladder 4 and Rescue Co. 1 were busy on the roof of the exposure cutting a trench to stop the fire. Due to overhead wires and a tree in the front yard of the fire building, aerial ladder access was impossible. Companies carried saws and assorted hand tools over ground ladders to reach their objective. Heavy fire had now engulfed the rear of the fire building and both exposures. With fire now evident in the common cockloft of the row, Acting Deputy Chief Gasiorowski struck a 4th Alarm at 0447 hours. Still more manpower would be needed if there was any hope of saving any homes in the row. Hence, Special Calls for an additional engine and truck apiece were transmitted above the 4th Alarm. This practically depleted all of Jersey City's apparatus, so two North Hudson companies ended up at the fire.

As dawn broke, the combined efforts of ten handlines, extensive truck work and a break in the common cockloft confined the fire to four buildings, 31, 31A, 33 and 35 Summit Ave. All buildings were two stories in height, measuring 20' x 45' with rear one and two story extensions in the rear, and were all heavily damaged. The F.D.J.C. Fire Investigation Unit had six investigators on the scene and were focusing their efforts on the rear extension of 31A Summit Ave. as the suspected point of origin.

Car 26, the Gong Club canteen, responded promptly on the 2nd Alarm, as Chauffeur Pat Spellman was in quarters when the box struck. The Club operated for over 5 hours, serving 9 gallons of coffee, 10 gallons of Gatorade, 210 bottles of water and 4 dozen snack cakes.
