LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Sunday, June 05, 2005 at 0233 Hours (2:33 a.m. PDT), thirteen Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, three LAFD Rescue Ambulances under one EMS District Captain, three Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams as well as various LAFD support and investigative resources, all under the direction of Assistant Chief Anthony Varela responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 7842 North Willis Avenue in Arleta/Panorama City. The first Companies arrived quickly to find heavy smoke coming from a 75 X 75 foot commercial structure. The men and women of the LAFD worked quickly to force entry, extend handlines and coordinate ventilation efforts, in their aggressive attack of the burgeoning flames. Their brisk and dedicated charge confined the fire to the structure of origin in just 28-minutes. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire damage is estimated at $200,000 ($100,000 structure and $100,000 contents).

LOS ANGELES, CA:
MAJOR EMERGENCY STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Sunday, June 05, 2005, at 1709 hours (5:09 P.M. PDT), thirty five companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, two Deputy Department Commanders, one Assistant Chief Officer Command Team, six Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, three Battalion EMS Supervisors, nine LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one Helicopter, two Arson units, one Urban Search & Rescue Team, Heavy Rescue 56, and other LAFD support personnel, under the direction of Deputy Department Commander Emil Mack, responded to a Major Emergency Structure Fire at 720 South Westlake Avenue in the Westlake area. First units on the scene reported a two/three story apartment building with heavy fire and smoke showing from the second and third floor and attic area of the three-story portion of the building. Firefighters used handlines to aggressively attack the fire while simultaneously conducting roof ventilation and search and rescue. A portion of the gable roof collapsed during roof ventilation and two Firefighters fell through into the involved portion of the attic; an Emergency Traffic alert was immediately issued for the missing Firefighters. Unassisted, both Firefighters were able to climb to safety suffering non-serious injuries. Both were assessed and transported to a local hospital for observation along with another Firefighter suffering from heat exhaustion; all three were listed in good condition. The fire was confined to the second and third floor and attic with water damage on the first floor. The fire was extinguished in one hour and fifty-one minutes. As a result of the fire, over two hundred and fifty occupants were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross. No civilian injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is listed as under investigation. Fire damage is still being tabulated.
