Monday 30th May 2005

H35 Tooting 4 Pump Fire Persons reported Aerial Required 1328hrs
Tooting Fire Crews were alerted to a fire in a flat at Lunchtime on Monday in Weir Road, Tooting. They arrived to find a severe fire in progress in a 3rd floor flat. Local Residents informed Crews that the occupants had not been accounted for, Pump’s were made four and an aerial appliance requested. Crews wearing BA made a rapid search of the premises and confirmed that no persons were involved. The fire was extinguished using a High Pressure Hosereel and the property made safe before crews left the scene.


Tuesday 31st May 2005

H25 West Norwood 4 Pump Fire 1324hrs
Several calls were received to a fire in the roof of a block of flats at Streatham Court on Leigham Avenue. Crews from West Norwood were backed up by Crews from Norbury in tackling the fire which damaged 10% of the roof of the 40 x 20m 6 storey Block. Two Hosereels were used to bring the fire under control.

A34 Edmonton 4 Pump Fire 2017hrs
Two Pumps from Edmonton Fire Station were despatched to the Two Brewers Public House in Silver Street, Upper Edmonton. They arrived to find 75% of the two storey 20 x 12 m structure alight on the first floor with smoke logging on the ground floor. Pumps were made up to 4 and a further 2 Pumps from Enfield were ordered on to the Incident. BA Crews entered the structure and managed to contain the fire to three quarters of the upper floor using two Hosereels and a Thermal Image Camera.


Wednesday 1st June 2005

E29 Lee Green Persons Reported Fire 1647hrs
A woman was rescued from the first floor bedroom of her house in Ryan Close Balckheath when Fire broke out and trapped her exit route. Fire Crews from Lee Green arrived on the scene quickly and managed to rescue the woman and limit damage to 25% of the first floor


Thursday 2nd June 2005

F41 Dagenham 4 Pump Fire Persons reported Aerial Required 0048hrs
A man had a lucky escape from a shop and dwelling in Goresbrook Road Dagenham in the early Hours of Thursday Morning. Two Pumps from Dagenham were despatched to the scene followed by another two Pumps from Barking on receipt of multiple calls to the fire. Crews arrived to find the whole of the three storey 14 x 9 meter structure fully involved. Crews used 3 jest 4 hosereels and an Aerial Monitor to control the blaze. The Building was severely damaged and was left in the care of the Borough Surveyor once crews had extinguished the fire and completed the overhaul.

E40 Sidcup 4 Pump Fire Persons reported 0223hrs
Queen Mary’s Hospital was put on evacuation alert after a fire was reported in a first floor Bathroom. Crews arrived to find Hospital staff evacuating part of the affected area. Pumps were made up to four and Crews from Sidcup were joined by other Crews from Eltham and Bexley. The fire was confined to the Bathroom block and tackled by BA Crews using a Hosereel and Thermal Image Camera. 2 Persons were rescued by BA Crews suffering from Smoke Inhalation; they were transferred downstairs to the unaffected Accident and Emergency Department where they were treated.


Friday 3rd June 2005

G33 Kensington 4 Pump Fire Persons Reported 1852hrs
Firefighters were called to a Commercial Building in Warwick Avenue in Earls Court and arrived to find smoke issuing on several levels of the 4 floor 15 x 7 m Building. A man who had escaped the Building with slight burns reported to arriving crews that other persons were trapped in the basement. BA Crews entered the Building and located a man and female on the second floor and remained with them while other crews tackled the fire which was located on the staircase on the basement, ground and first floor. The Fire was tackled using two Hosereels. Crews from Kensington and Hammersmith attended the fire.

Sunday 6th June 2005

F22 Poplar 4 Pump Fire 1948hrs
East End Fire Crews were having a busy Sunday Evening with a number of small and working incidents when the second call was received to a Fire with Explosions in a Block of Tenement Buildings in Devas Street. Crews from Poplar were ordered to the incident whilst returning from another call along with another Crew from Bethnal Green. A Gang of Youth had built up a pile of rubbish in the communal hall on the third floor of the block and set light to it, spreading smoke to the upper floors. The Crews quickly extinguished the blaze and BA Crews ventilated the floors above reassuring worried residents. The explosions were caused by exploding aerosol cans. Police and the MAIAT team, mobilised from LFB HQ in response to the explosions were stood down en-route.

GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:


On Monday, June 06, 2005, at 0439 hours (4:39 A.M. PDT), fifteen companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one Assistant Chief Officer Command Team, five Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, one Arson Unit, two Battalion EMS Supervisors, six LAFD Rescue Ambulances, and other support personnel, under the direction of Assistant Chief Tony M. Varela, responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 8319 South Broadway Street in the South Los Angeles area. First units on the scene reported a two-story, garden-style apartment building over garages with fire showing from the first and second floor. Firefighters using handlines aggressively attacked the fire that was spreading rapidly into the attic area. The fire was confined to one unit on the first floor and the attic area of two units on the second floor of the “Evergreen Community Apartments” and extinguished in thirty-four minutes. The American Red Cross is assisting displaced occupants. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is listed as under investigation. Fire damage is still being tabulated.

- New England - NH,VT, MA,CT - Snow Storm, 10-24 inches of snow fall in region. Most of summer temps remained in 40-50 degree range during day. - Aftermath of volcano eruption in Java of Mount Tambora over a year ago (April 1 1815)

1836 - Colebrook - NH - Green Gables burn

1871 - Manchester - NH - Manchester and North Weare Railroad bridge over Merrimack River destroyed by fire

1979 - Claremont - NH - Old Joy manufacturing company Main Street- Large mill building with oil soaked floors. Multiple alarm-(Pre-Plan). Smoke was blocking the sun at times and could be seen over 35 miles away.


Notable incidents beyond New England

1889
- Seattle - WA - 31 city blocks destroyed by fire - 2 killed - $15,000,000 damage

1994 - Harrisburg - PA - Multiple Alarm - Former Penn. Dept of Transportation Bldg - 12 Story - $150 million loss - 42 pieces responded
