On 7 June 2005, in the middle of a state of emergency caused by flood waters rising, Redwood Meadows Emergency Services crews, along with other emergency agencies, responded to a multiple-patient motor vehicle collision on Highway 66 in the Kananaskis region.
A new Jeep Cherokee was being driven westbound when it was struck by a piece of pipe that reportedly fell off an eastbound oilfield tractor-trailer flatbed. The pipe, 8" in diameter and approximately 16 feet long, went completely through the SUV, killing the driver and front seat passenger, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 30s, respectively.
A juvenile passenger lying in the back seat was uninjured, but was taken to hospital in Calgary for assessment.
The vehicle continued approximately 800 feet up the road from the point of impact, along a curve, until it entered the ditch and ultimately stopped. It did not roll over and remained upright.
The truck was stopped several towns away by police; reportedly the driver was unaware he had lost part of his load.
Redwood Meadows Emergency Services has been otherwise rather busy today, with flood warnings and heavy rainfall warnings resulting in numerous calls for reports of flooding or imminent concern of same.
