*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM FIRE IN SCRAP-METAL YARD:

On Wednesday, June 08, 2005 at 8:37 a.m. PDT, fourteen companies of Los Angeles firefighters, four LAFD Rescue Ambulances under one EMS District Captain, Arson Investigators and four Battalion Commanders under the direction of Assistant Chief Roy Kozaki responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire in a Metal Recycling Plant/Scrap Yard at 1000 East Slauson Avenue in South Los Angeles. The First arriving units found a voluminous fire blazing among the multifarious autos and accumulation of scrap metal within the capacious yard, known as “Kramer Metals”. Due to the mass and arduous task of extinguishing a blaze of this type, the hardworking men and women of the Los Angeles launched a defensive attack on the fire, utilizing ladderpipes and heavy streams to knock down the bulk of the fire. The hallowed efforts of firefighters allowed them to eventually stretch handlines to advance their battle of the well-entrenched flames. No area evacuations were necessary as the fire was contained to the yard alone and was ultimately extinguished in a laborious three hours. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported to firefighters or onsite workers. The cause is determined to be accidental, attributed to a heavy equipment operator who punctured a propane tank while moving a motor home, which initiated an explosion and subsequent fire. Loss is being tabulated.

LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE AT GOWER STUDIOS:

On Wednesday, June 08, 2005 at 8:48 a.m. PDT, eleven companies of Los Angeles firefighters, three LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one EMS District Captain, one Arson Investigator, and three Battalion Commanders under the direction of Assistant Chief Richard Warford responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 6076 West Fountain Avenue in Hollywood. First arriving companies reported smoke showing from Stage 12 at Gower Studios. Upon further investigation utilizing a Thermal Imaging Camera, firefighters discovered a smoldering fire in the walls, which caused the basement to be charged with smoke. Firefighters mounted an aggressive attack on the fire as they stretched handlines and began ventilation operations in order to terminate the spread of flame. Evacuation efforts were not necessary, as the stage was not being occupied by a production and no one was injured. A lone worker was the antecedent of the blaze as he operated welding equipment during construction efforts for a future show therefore; the cause was determined to be accidental. Fire damage is estimated at $100,000 to structure only.

Several fire Dept's were called to help with the fire. During the fir; Somers had a PI accident, the City of Kenosha took the PI accident. Rehab was also called. Nevada Wildland FF Killed (The Secret list)

Hey....

A Nevada Division of Forestry firefighter crew supervisor died in an ATV wreck Friday afternoon. Audie Lee Cross, 44, of Carlin died from blunt force trauma after the four-wheeler he was driving flipped on top of him. Cross was working with his 12-man Carlin Conservation Camp fire crew about 10 miles south of Battle Mountain on a fence-building project, said NDF Regional Forester William Wolf. Unger said the inmate crew contacted 9-1-1. Cross is survived by his wife, Lori, and their seven children. Go to www.Firehouse.com for additional details. As always, our deepest sympathies go out to all involved and especially the family of Firefighter Cross.

2 More Apparatus Crashes-DC & NJ (The Secret list)

Fire apparatus responding to a call wound up in an accident that left the firefighters with just minor injuries. According to D-C Fire and E-M-S spokesman Alan Etter, the apparatus driver apparently lost control on a curve. The fire truck hit a guard rail, flipped onto its side, then came to a stop in the opposite lane. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The four firefighters aboard are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at area hospitals. As for the call the truck was responding to, Etter says it turned out to be a minor kitchen fire.... and in New Jersey this afternoon, apparatus from the Minotola Fire Company in Buena (Atlantic County) was involved in a crash that resulted in the apparatus driving into a single family dwelling. They were returning from a funeral detail when the crash occurred. One member was treated and released.

Take Care-BE CAREFUL.

HAY FIRE-3rd day in a row-LEW BRIGGS @ S. BELTWAY; KM: 573W - Pearland VFD was just dispatched to Lew Briggs at the south Belt for another rekindling of Monday's hay fire. HFD has been requested for mutual aid. The Pearland chiefs believe this is suspicious because the fire seems to wait approximately 24 hours before flaring up again-- does it around the same time each day. And on Monday and Tuesday when they left, there were NO signs of fire at all. Public Works is again in route with a tractor. Engine 42 is in route at this time. 348 is in route to get Engine 41 and 336 is in route to get Engine 32. 340 is in route to the location. This is Engine 42's 3rd time on this same fire (Houston's 3rd time too), and the second fire for 42 this morning. PVFD will be operating on 453.850 and will probably be out there for several hours. 11:00
