*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

JERSEY CITY, NJ: 6/18/05 3-3 759

DOUBLE TROUBLE!

Saturday, June 18, 2005 was a near perfect late spring day in Jersey City; a mix of sun and clouds, warm, but not oppressive temperatures and low humidity. As the day continued into late evening, buffs and fire fighters alike were gathered on the apron of their various quarters, enjoying the night and looking forward to an equally pleasant summer. However, things would turn extremely hot at 2238 hours when the evening calm was punctuated by the Fire Dispatch Center "Striking Box 759, Building Fire, Ege Ave. & Kennedy Blvd." As units turned out, minds were racing as to what lied at that corner: a large church and rectory, tightly packed homes, some commercial structures to the south of the intersection and a railroad cut now used as the Hudson Bergen Light Rail System.

Second due Eng. Co. 8 reported a heavy fire condition visible from quarters as they turned out. Eng. Co. 17, under the command of newly promoted Captain Michael Cleary, covered the three block run from their quarters quickly and reported a Working Fire as they rounded the corner into Ege Ave. east towards Bergen Ave. As the balance of the first alarm assignment arrived, fire exploded out every window of a 2.5 story frame dwelling at 142 Ege Ave. Before companies could start water, flames were leaping 50 feet into the night sky and lunging across the street, threatening several other dwellings. Three handlines were quickly deployed, but fire had extended to two detached two story frame dwellings at #140 (a new home barely finished) and #144. Battalion 2, Batt. Chief Peter Gasiorowski, ordered Eng. Co. 17 to back out of the building. He then reported "We have three buildings involved; transmit a 2nd Alarm!"

More apparatus converged on the short block, cramming the corners of both Bergen Ave. and Kennedy Blvd. Engine Companies 22-15 took the rear of the buildings on Virginia Ave. Overhead wires, a perennial problem in Jersey City, prevented the use of ladder pipes. Several 2.5" handlines were now stretched and Eng. Co. 17 started their deck gun as the roof of the original fire building collapsed with a thunderous roar. The east wall bowed out, melting the vinyl siding off the entire sidewall of #140 Ege Ave. Deputy Chief Thomas Kearney arrived as these events unfolded and ordered a 3rd Alarm. With the original fire building now rendered a burning hulk of a structure, efforts were concentrated on knocking down the fire in both exposures. Little fire extended into the new home at #140 after the siding burned off, but the wood frame and composition shingles on #144 required a lot of truck work to locate and extinguish fire in the walls of this dwelling. Good progress was made and by 2330 hours, the fire was under control, companies were ordered to Car 26, the Gong Club canteen and the 3rd Alarm assignment was ordered to pick up and return.

While many companies were enjoying a well-deserved break at Car 26, others were taking up or mopping up on the fireground. Battalion 1, Batt. Chief Robert Forenza, radioed that he spotted smoke in the rear of a building across the street and he was investigating. The chauffeur of Eng. Co. 18, Fire Fighter Kenneth Simone, was supplying Eng. Co. 8 from Bergen Ave. and had a clear view of the south side of Ege Ave. looking down the Light Rail cut. He reported that there was now heavy fire visible on all floors from the rear of a building on the opposite side of the street.

Division 1, Deputy Chief Kearney, ordered all companies at Car 26 to report back to the fireground and ordered Fire Dispatch to send the 3rd Alarm assignment back to the scene! As companies scrambled to do an about face and train streams on the south side, flames were now rolling across all floors of a 2.5 story vacant dwelling at 141 Ege Ave. Eng. Co. 17 swung their deck gun around and placed it in the alley between #141 and a 2 story dwelling to the east. Other companies entered that building and operated handlines from the 2nd floor and roof into the now blazing structure. Six handlines and the deck gun eventually were brought into play. Ladder Co. 11 reported from the roof of the exposure that 3/4 of the roof of #141 had already collapsed. The building was in deplorable condition and the collapsed roof may have been a pre-existing condition. This fire was darkened down by 0100 hours, leaving Ege Ave. looking like a war zone. Two members of the F.D.J.C. Fire Investigation Unit then began the task of sorting this mess out. Obvious questions include how the original fire got to such an advanced stage upon arrival and whether flying brands or foul play brought the fire across the street.

Helping Our Own

"firefighter helping firefighter"

There are literally thousands of fire departments, nationwide, that are struggling to keep their doors open on a shoestring budget. Many don't have personal protective clothing, breathing apparatus, or even helmets to protect these courageous firefighters. Some are fighting structure fires in blue jeans and sweatshirts, and some of the poorer departments don't even have fire engines, they have to fight structure fires with a brush truck. That is unacceptable when larger departments are destroying good usable equipment, on a daily basis, which could be donated to these needy departments.

Please check out the following website - Maybe your FD can help out.
