    Default Safer Application Numbers,whats yours

How many SAFER apps do you think there will be?

What do you think of recreational items for use in recruit and retention? ( no boats or cars, no way out items )

    Default SAFER Apps

I sent our application this morning and we were #590.

With 4+ days left, I guessing (no real basis)1200-1500 total. Could be more since there are well over 3000 apps started.

    Default How many apps

At 3:45 pm est on 6/27 our application was # 1215 - which is 6% of the total AFG applications.

I guess you could justify recreation items for recruitment - We like many of our area departments have a rescue boat - and there are some nice recreation opportunities when not answering calls in the middle of the night - then it pure fear!!!

I am curious how people approached this grant - for a career department it is really a no brainer.

For volunteer department - it was an opportunity for creative efforts. We have what I think is a competitive application - we have a new Recruitment and Retention Committee started before the grant and we have been working on a Length of Service Award. We put in marketing plan for recruitment - nothing special - brochures, web sites, advertising signs. We are trying a stipend for a coordinator and a Junior Firefighter program. Finally, we have training through coaches for the Department and Officers on diversity, communication, leadership and Team-building - this is our plan to deal with the issue of retention. In general, I think the plan is a bit shoot for the moon. I have no fear given our community that we will not be in the first round - my hope is that we will be in some of later rounds of the grant.

In general, there was a lot to this grant - in part because it was comprehensive - when you are writing a 4 year grant - you tend to think about solving all your needs.

I also had an question with the retention rate - in our situation - we have a lot of members who have been in the department for years but we are not getting new members and the members that we have are older (average age is 53). We are also having a hard time keeping our members active.

    Now the waiting starts,

I would be interested to hear how others approached this grant program.

    Post safer grant

Finished the grant Monday at 2200 number 1518. Crossing my fingers and thinking happy thoughts. We can really use the 1 more guy we asked for. With only the chief as a full time FF/EMT it would be a huge benefit to have another FF/EMT at the station, nobody in town in the daytime 9-5.

Co11, you submitted between the two that I did, and WVREIS you got in 7 apps after my second. Put it in at 1620 at #02747.
