*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

LOS ANGELES, CA:
MAJOR EMERGENCY STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Monday, June 20, 2005 at 7:02 AM PDT, nineteen Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, five LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one EMS District Captain, six Chief Officer Command Teams and various LAFD support and investigative resources, all under the direction of Los Angeles Fire Department Deputy Chief Mario Rueda responded to a Major Emergency Structure Fire at 1721 South Trinity Street in the Garment District. The first Company arrived quickly to discover heavy smoke showing from a 75’ x 75’ one-story commercial structure. Firefighters expertly forced entry through rolling steel doors at both the front and rear of the closed and well-secured business to do battle with flames that had taken hold of extremely dense textile storage. With heavy brick construction supporting a thick concrete roof, the oven-like conditions within the building were exacerbated by a physical reliance on horizontal ventilation. Making their way among the intensely hot and narrow aisles of combustible floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall rolled and bailed fabric, Firefighters held the fire within non-sprinklered building and extinguished the flames in just 53 minutes. There were no injuries. The fire loss suffered by “Elegant Textiles, Inc.” is still being tabulated. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
