*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE WITH INJURY TO FIREFIGHTER:

On Sunday, June 26, 2005 at 1:14 PDT, ten companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances, two EMS District Captains, and one Chief Officer Command Team under the direction of Battalion Commander Daryl Arbuthnott responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 10379 West Ashton Avenue in Bel Air. Firefighters arrived quickly to discover a two-story duplex with light smoke showing from one unit. After an expeditious assessment of the unit, firefighters identified heavy fire in the attic. Firefighters extended handlines along with simultaneous salvage efforts and vertical ventilation in an effort to confine the fire to the attic alone. The aggressive efforts of the men and women of the LAFD were successful, and the fire was knocked-down in just 20 minutes. As firefighters battled the blaze, the residents of the dwelling alerted firefighters to the presence of multiple animals within the structure. Firefighters conducted a thorough search and happily retrieved two dogs and two cats unharmed. One firefighter was treated for a minor injury to his right leg, as he engaged in fire ground operations, and was transported to UCLA Medical Center and released. The loss from the fire is estimated at $220,000 ($200,000 to structure & $20,000 to contents). The cause of this blaze is categorized as electrical.

*** FireNet Group Of The Day: ***

CFN, Columbia Fire Net, is a product of the Columbia, Missouri Fire Department. It was established to provide information via pagers to Chief Officers, Rescue and HazMat Team members and eventually to any interested CFD member. The pagers are provided at no cost to CFD members. With 4 pin options available, members could select any 2 additional types of pages. Obviously their individual pin, then a CFD all call pin and their choice of 2 more. About 2 dozen elected to receive CFN as one of their options. As of this writing there are 4 who are authorized to send out national pages. National paging will remain a very closely held authority. Since we are new, we have a rather steep learning curve. As Fire Chief, Wm. Markgraf is the nominal head of the system. The other 3 "national dispatchers" are employees of the CFD.

The telephone number for the Columbia Fire Department is 573 874 7391.
Home number for Darrin Arends is 573 687 3461.
E-Mail: dwa@gocolumbiamo.com
Personal Pager 499 8686

The CFD Web Page is: http://www.GoColumbiaMo.com which is the citywide page, then select the fire department.

Other dispatchers include Battalion Chief Ron McCord, Lieutenant Steve Sapp, and Engineer Dan McGavick. We sign by CFN/(and then our LAN identifications which is usually our initials.) For "snail mail" communications we may be reached at:
