The diversity of Firefighting in a major city is highlighted here by the fact that no major incidents occurred on Sunday but 48 Hours later London’s Firefighters fought a number of large Incidents. Added to that above was the fact that major Thunderstorms lashed North and North East London during the Evening causing LFB Control to initiate ‘Batch Mobilising’ where individual Pumps are given lists of flood calls to attend when call volume threatens to overwhelm resources. As well as the larger incidents, Pump from most Stations North of the Thames spent a large part of the evening running from one storm related call to the other. The call rate during the evening was four times the usual peak rate. Crews from Essex and Hertfordshire Fire Brigades were drafted in to North East London to assist LFB crews in dealing with the incidents.
LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:
On Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at 02:24 AM PDT, twelve Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, four LAFD Rescue Ambulances, two EMS District Captains and three Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams under the direction of Los Angeles Fire Department Assistant Chief Douglas Barry responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 3209 West 73rd Street in Southwest Los Angeles. Firefighters arrived quickly to discover heavy fire in the attic of a 4,660 square-foot two-story eight-unit garden style apartment building. Firefighters mounted a tenacious attack on the fire from within the structure, confining the bulk of the flames to the common attic with fire extension into the four upper floor units. Firefighters extinguished the flames in just 45 minutes and no injuries were reported. Properly functioning Smoke Alarms are credited with alerting residents and allowing them to escape unscathed. Though swift and conscientious salvage efforts by Firefighters spared significant damage, four of the uninvolved apartments sustained the collateral effects of smoke and water, making them at least temporarily untenable. The American Red Cross is providing placement assistance to a total of nine adults and six children. Loss to the 57 year-old wood-frame structure and contents is estimated at $900,000. The cause of this early morning blaze remains under active investigation.

Firefighters were able to ascertain that the mini-van rolled down the embankment off the freeway after being involved in the accident. FF Life Saved, FF Heat Stress and StandDown followup (The Secret list)
A Memphis firefighter is recovering from possible heat exhaustion after collapsing while fighting an apartment fire earlier this week. The firefighter is reported to have been in respiratory arrest for a time, was revived and then taken to Methodist South Hospital, where she was later listed in stable condition. Some reports are that the heat and humidity-along with the job related work contributed to the problem.
This time of year especially is rough on us when operating in the hot and humid weather. This is a good reminder to make sure all FD's are prepared to deal with firefighters and the predictable hot weather. Issues such as additional staffing called sooner and quicker, cooling, rehab and related issues come to mind. We recently posted a pretty cool Powerpoint download and article called: "Firefighter Heat Stress & Rehabilitation" on our Firefighter Safety and Survival Downloads page. Check it out: http://www.firefighterclosecalls.com/downloads.php
Scroll down on that page and you'll see it and lots of other good stuff on that page as well.
Also, last week, most of you or your FD's participated in the National Firefighter Safety Stand Down. The IAFC wants to measure the level and type of participation in the stand down... regardless of whether you or your department participated, so please take a few seconds to answer the following questions. Go to the below the link below to take this short survey.

A final quick note... anyone can easily be added to The Secret List... just go to: http://www.firefighterclosecalls.com/secret.php
No need to write me on that, unless you are really lonely. Also, if you do write, and it takes a little while to get back to you-it ain't personal... at least not always. But it is summertime we LOVE summertime... which means we move a little slower... sometimes.
Take Care-BE CAREFUL.
