*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

LOS ANGELES, CA:

GREATER ALARM BRUSH FIRE:

On Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at 8:49 AM PDT, thirteen Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one LAFD Rescue Ambulance, one EMS District Captain, two LAFD Helicopters, four Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, as well as LAFD investigative and all support resources, all under the direction of Los Angeles Fire Department Assistant Chief Michael Fulmis responded to a Greater Alarm Grass Fire near 4225 North Telluride Street in El Sereno. The first Company arrived quickly to discover a half-acre of hillside vegetation ablaze in difficult terrain threatening several nearby homes. Firefighters, aided by a series of precise helicopter water drops, quickly flanked the fire with handlines. This well-coordinated ground and air assault confined the flames to two acres of grass and brush, sparing half a dozen homes from damage. The flames were extinguished in just 59 minutes and no injuries were reported. The cause of this fire remains under active investigation.

GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at 10:59 PM PDT, fourteen Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, four Los Angeles Fire Department Rescue Ambulances, two EMS District Captains, four Chief Officer Command Teams and various LAFD support and investigative units, all under the direction of Battalion Commander Joseph Foley responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 7207 North Balboa Boulevard in Van Nuys. The first Company arrived promptly to find smoke showing from a one-story strip mall. Firefighters quickly forced entry into more than a half dozen firms and commenced both salvage and vertical ventilation as they ultimately found the seat of the fire within the “Layco Relaxing Store”. The bulk of flames were skillfully confined to upholstered furnishings at the rear of the business, and extinguished in less than 21 minutes. There were no injuries. Loss from the blaze is estimated at $30,000 ($20,000 structure & $10,000 contents). The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
