looking to start in field.

i am looking to get into the fire fighting field. numerous family members have been involved in the fire department, however we just moved from NY to FL (Kissimmee) and do not know anything about the local fire departments. if anyone has any information as to getting started in a department i would greatly appreciate it. I do not know if i want volunteer for now and go full time after i can get in and complete fire school. any info would help out. thanks.

How do you feel about EMS? Cuase that is what you are going to be doing. FL FDs run 90% EMS calls. It isn't the same as NY. I'm not sure about the kissimme area, but I know where I am if you're a white male without any local connections getting hired as just a FF/EMT is difficult. Being a paramedic is a shoe in.
And in case you didn't know, very few FDs in FL use an academy or anything, you'll have to attend a minimum standards class and EMT classes, then just start applying.

The first step for a career department, would be to put in a job application for the city and department that you would like to work for.

They should be able to tell you what you need to do to get yourself ready for the tests that you have to take and complete. If you aren't in a good physical shape, start getting yourself in better shape, as you will need to be good shape physically.

They will and should give you a study guide to get your mind ready for the tests. Study it with the idea that YOU will past the written test and physical test without any problems.

Central FL doesn't use academies.....you'll need to take FF I and II @ a local college as well as an EMT certification class, and a emergency vehicles operators course. That is the bare minimum in Central FL, If you become a paramedic you are a shoe in.

Costello: I get behind the plate to do some fancy catching, Tomorrow's pitching on my team and a heavy hitter gets up. Now the heavy hitter bunts the ball. When he bunts the ball, me, being a good catcher, I'm gonna throw the guy out at first base. So I pick up the ball and throw it to who?

Abbott: Now that's the first thing you've said right.

Costello: I don't even know what I'm talking about!

PAUSE

Abbott: That's all you have to do.

Costello: Is to throw the ball to first base.

Abbott: Yes!

Costello: Now who's got it?

Abbott: Naturally.

PAUSE

Costello: Look, if I throw the ball to first base, somebody's gotta get it. Now who has it?

Abbott: Naturally.

Costello: So I pick up the ball and I throw it to Naturally.
