Just wondering what other firefighters do for second or third jobs?
How does your boss deal with your fd schedule? What happens when you have to work overtime? What is your fd schedule?
I work 24/48 and my second job is instructor for local academy, not many hours more of a hobby than a second job.

I work in the support services division of the Massachusetts Fire Academy in Stow (3 miles from my home door to door!), own my own automotive detailing venture and do freelance writing/reporting for two local weekly newspapers."The education of a firefighter and the continued education of a firefighter is what makes "real" firefighters. Continuous skill development is the core of progressive firefighting. We learn by doing and doing it again and again, both on the training ground and the fireground."

Currently I own my own lawn care business so my boss doesn't mind my FD schedule at all.
However, prior to starting this business I worked at a Honda motorcycle shop that also employed a couple of other firemen so the boss was used to it and just made sure he had guys from all three (24hr) shifts.
Talking to other guys here it seems that majority work in labor of some kind.

Since I am a Paramedic on a BLS engine, I keep my skills up by working for a private ambulance company in CT that does 911. I also help some brothers out with landscaping and construction when they need it."I have no ambition in this world but one, and that is to be a fireman. The position may, in the eyes of some, appear to be a lowly one; but we know the work which a fireman has to do believe that his is a noble calling."

I work in our Credit Union located in a room in the second floor of one of our Stations. It just so happens that 2 weeks after I took the job they moved me to this same station. So I spend most of my life at this station. I get a shower and walk upstairs to my second job.

Hello I am new here from S.C.
I just started my own sign and graphics design company for my second job. We do vinyl and sandblasted signs, vehicle magnetics, fleet lettering, vehicle graphics, boat graphics, and custom decals. If anyone is interested I give a 10% discount to all Firefighters.
07-14-2005, 01:23 AM #18Wow...is that as glamorous a job as it seems to me right now (on Sunday in Kentucky where we can't buy beer because it is sacreligious)? Did they offer an employee discount?
Hey and they give us a hard time here in Utah Even the Mormons can purchase beer here on Sunday in most places.Front line since 1983 and still going strong
