WALTON Firefighters return to find fire at station

MIRAMAR BEACH — South Walton firefighters returned to their Miramar Beach station Wednesday night to find a light, smoky haze inside.

Fire Marshal Sammy Sanchez said firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to scan a wall connecting the engine bay with an exercise room. Once a hot spot was located, firefighters put the fire out with a fire extinguisher.

He said the building’s electricity has been disconnected pending repairs and an examination by an electrical contractor that could take one to two weeks.

In the meantime, Sanchez said the Miramar station’s firefighters have been working out of the Mack Bayou station.

“There’s room there for them,” he said. “But as a district we’d prefer them to be closer to their zone to prevent delayed response times.” Sanchez said he was trying to locate temporary space for the firefighters Thursday afternoon.
