*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

ALBUQUERQUE, NM: 7-6-05

An asphalt plant fire sent thick, black smoke into the sky over Albuquerque late Wednesday morning. It happened at the Holly Asphalt plant on the 4900 block of Edith. A Holly Asphalt spokesperson said a motor on the roof of a liquid asphalt tank caught fire. The Albuquerque Fire Department is investigating, but they are not sure if any of the liquid asphalt actually caught fire. Firefighters used a chemical to douse the flames because water could have reacted with the liquid asphalt. Firefighters are also unsure if the smoke was toxic. Officials shut down parts of Edith and Griego during the fire.
