Our thoughts and prayers go out to FF Uhl's family and to the Brothers and Sisters of the Detroit Fire Department.

An off-duty Detroit firefighter was killed in a boat crash on Lake St. Clair Sunday.

Stephen Brian Uhl, 39, was boating in the Snooks Highway channel, which connects the middle channel of Lake St. Clair and Little Muscamoot Bay, on the east side of Lake St. Clair at about 8:30 p.m. when the crash occurred, according to the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators said Uhl was the driver of a 15-foot jet boat which was outbound in the channel, and turned in front of an inbound 16-foot jet boat. The collision caused the 16-foot boat to ride over the top of the 15-foot boat, the sheriff's department reported.

Uhl and a female passenger were transported to St. John River District Hospital, where Uhl was pronounced dead on arrival. The female passenger was not seriously injured, the sheriff's department said.

The occupants of the 16-foot boat were also treated at the hospital for injuries that were not believed to be serious, the sheriff's department said.
