EDGEWATER -- An accident on U.S. 1 involving a motorcycle and car Thursday night left Edgewater's Fire Department captain and its code enforcement supervisor with serious injuries.
Capt. Steve Cousins and Angela DeSue were riding a motorcycle north on U.S. 1, approaching the traffic light at Tenth Street about 7:30 p.m. when the accident occurred, police Sgt. Larry Jarjovsky said.

A car driven by a woman pulled out of a parking lot on the west side of U.S. 1 south of Tenth Street, attempting to cross U.S. 1 to Magnolia Street, and struck the motorcycle, he said.

Cousins was transported to Halifax Medical Center by helicopter, said Jarjovsky, while DeSue was taken to Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach. EVAC spokesman Mark O'Keefe said Cousins was transported in critical condition and DeSue in serious condition.

"I spoke with both of them tonight and they're both conscious," said Edgewater Fire Chief Tracey Barlow. "Each has a fractured leg."

No name or age was immediately available for the woman driving the car, Jarjovsky said, but she was not injured.

Barlow said Cousins and DeSue are in their mid-30s. Neither wore a helmet, he said.
