*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

    UNITED KINGDOM
    LONDON, ENGLAND

    SATURDAY 9 JULY

    Piccadilly Ė restaurant blaze:

Eight fire engines and around forty firefighters tackled a blaze in a restaurant in Piccadilly this evening. Around sixty people were evacuated from the restaurant after smoke was seen coming from the roof of the building. The fire started in the extraction ducting leading up the side of the seven storey building. Around a quarter of the ground floor restaurant was destroyed by the blaze which fire investigation officers believe started accidentally.

The Brigade was called at 1710 and the fire was under control by 2335. Crews from Knightsbridge, Kensington and Chelsea fire stations attended the incident.

    Erith Ė flats fire:

Firefighters tackled a blaze at a thirteen storey block of flats in Boundary Road in Erith tonight. The fire started in a discarded sofa on the ninth floor landing causing thick smoke to block the internal stairwell. The blaze gutted the whole landing as well as causing smoke damage throughout the building.

Fires involving discarded furniture and rubbish put lives and property at risk. Most are started deliberately, often by children or young people. Remember to dispose of any unwanted furniture responsibly, and ask your local council to collect any large items that you want to get rid of.

The Brigade was called at 2343 and the fire was under control by 0027. Crews from Erith and Hillingdon fire station attended the incident.

    New Mexico Firewatch Updates: 7/9/05

A fire destroyed two homes and prompted temporary evacuations as it ignited a propane tank in one of the yards. The fire occurred Thursday in San Juan county near Crouch Mesa. A residential neighborhood consisting of mostly trailers was evacuated. San Juan County Fire Chief Larry Marcum says the blaze may have started as a brush fire. Marcum says residents are fortunate that the propane tank didnít explode, but it did release pressure making a sound similar to that of a jet take-off. Three other homes were badly damaged. One firefighter suffered from smoke inhalation and exhaustion.

The Bernalillo County Commission voted Tuesday evening to impose fire restrictions across a large portion of the county. Despite this yearís record-breaking rainfall, county officials say a drought condition persists, which compelled the county to ban open fires, campfires, smoking and all fireworks in the East Mountains and bosque. There have already been major fires in the northern and southern parts of the state. County officials say the ban is needed to protect timber, vegetation and property in the county. Fuels such as grass and brush are more in abundance this year because of the above-normal precipitation this winter and spring. In the past month, that vegetation has begun to dry out. The Bernalillo County Fire Department predicts that there will be an increased risk of fire danger through the end of July. The Sandia and Manzano districts of the Cibola National Forest, Sandoval County and the City of Albuquerque have already imposed fire restrictions.

Fire crews are making headway battling the mammoth Cave Creek Complex fire. Firefighters have managed to protect the community of Black Canyon City north of Phoenix that was in the path the fire by burning out vegetation. Theyíre conducting more burnout operations Saturday near New River and about 20 miles south of Camp Verde. The fire has charred more than 214,000 acres. The blaze is 45 percent contained.

State Road 4 has reopened after a small fire forced officials to close it. The road was closed near White Rock and Los Alamos. The fire, which officials now say burned only an acre or two, was near the Bandelier National Monument. Officials first said it burned about five acres. Itís fully contained. Firefighters from San Ildefonso Pueblo, the lab, Los Alamos County, the U.S. Forest Service and Bandelier responded. Fire officer Jim Whittington says the cause of the fire isnít known. It appeared to be partly on pueblo land and partly on Bandelier, but Whittington says itís hard to tell boundaries

Fireworks sparked a fire just south of the Torrance County village of Manzano Monday afternoon and burned approximately nine acres. A fire information officer says the Forest Service, Mountainair Fire Department and Torreon Fire Department responded. The fire burned all the way around one structure but it never caught fire. A Torrance County sheriffís deputy on the scene told the Forest Service that a boy had admitted to using fireworks in the area just before the fire. The fire was contained quickly and one tanker was released to another small grass fire in the area.
