JERSEY CITY, NJ: 7/13/05
London's Terror Bombings Spurs Fears in Jersey City

0922hrs Jersey City, NJ (Hudson) FDJC fire dispatch received calls reporting an explosion in the area of Newport Mall. This explosion was felt at Jersey City Fire Headquarters which is located on the other side of this Mall's large parking lot. Units arrived and they found a Red and Tan lines bus with black smoke emitting from the rear. Meanwhile Police officials at nearby East District Precinct felt this same blast and contacted thier control desk which sent out a full incendiary response to the Newport Mall. The initial moments of the incident brought fears of a bombing, due to the recent terror attack in London, England. Police officers evacuated the Mall and area residents of the densely populate area paused as to see what was going on.

Deputy Chief Tom Kearny sized up situation and had units maintain a distance until it was established that a incendiary device was not presenton the bus.

Arson Investigators determined the cause of the explosion was a ruptured gas lineon the bus. No one was hurt and this incident was declared under control at 1106hrs. This incident sent units from the following agencies in the area:

Jersey City Police and Fire Department

Port Authority of NY & NJ Police

New Jersey State Police

Jersey City & Hudson County's Office of Emergency Management.

One thing this incident proved, all agencies responded, communicated, and coordinated efforts to maximize effectiveness.

JERSEY CITY, NJ:
FDJC to take over ambulatory Services in Jersey City????

The Jersey City Medical Center informed City officials that to continue ambalatory services throughout the city the fee would be $4.5m per year. Up $4.5m from 1999 when the Medical Center signed a contract to perform ambalatory services at no charge to the city. Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy stated if the bid is not reduced signifigantly, the services can be performed by the Fire Department. Does the Fire Department have enough personell to perform this service? What about equipment? Currently, the Fire Director holds the title of Director of Fire and Emergency Services.

Does this mean all paramedics now become Fire Department personel as like FDNY. The next few weeks should be interesting to say the least on this subject. Stay tuned for updates.
