LOS VEGAS, NV:
LVFR MEDIA RELEASE results of school fire - intentionally set!

LAS VEGAS FIRE & RESCUE
DATE/TIME: 071405/1345PDT
RELEASE: 05-088

FIRE INVESTIGATORS DETERMINE MIDDLE SCHOOL FIRE WAS INTENTIONALLY SET

After an extensive investigation by Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, Clark County School District Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, investigators believe that juveniles playing in the school set the fire that destroyed the gymnasium of the Roy W. Martin Middle School, 2800 East Stewart Avenue. The findings of the investigation will be turned over to the Clark County District Attorney's Office for their review and possible prosecution. The fire caused an estimated $7.5 million damage to the school.

During the past week, investigators have been talking with a number of juveniles and their parents and they believe they have determined who is responsible for starting the fire. Las Vegas Fire Investigators will forward their findings to the Clark County District Attorney 's Office for review and possible prosecution. Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Investigators, Clark County School District Police and the Clark County District Attorney's Office will determine what charges, if any will be made.

Fire dispatchers received a call on Tuesday, July 5 at 4:23PM from Clark County School District Police dispatch that a smoke alarm activated in the school. A Las Vegas Fire & Rescue engine company was dispatched. When the engine crew arrived at the school, nothing was visible from outside the school. The crew walked around the school to make sure everything was all right and when they entered the gymnasium, they found it full of thick smoke and flames. A call was made for additional units which evidentially went to a third alarm which brought nearly 30 units and 75 firefighters from Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Clark County to battle the blaze which took over two hours to bring under control. When firefighters arrived, the fire had accelerated to where flames broke through the roof releasing thick black smoke which could be seen from all around the Valley. Within minutes the roof caved in causing extensive damage to the building.

But firefighters were successful in containing the fire to the gym, which was built in 1959 and made of wood. The rest of the school had some smoke and water damage, but was spared from being destroyed by the fire. On Monday, the school was released to district officials and insurance investigators to start the process of cleaning up the debris and determining what the next step would be.

Immediately following the fire, investigators started looking into the cause of the fire. Reports were received that an air conditioner on the roof was responsible. Also there were reports of kids playing with fireworks. A request was made for assistance from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Las Vegas office and the National Response Team, which arrived on the following Thursday. Nearly 30 investigators from Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, CCSD Police and ATF worked the weekend to determine a cause. By the end of Sunday July 10, investigators had determined the fire was incendiary; but determining who was responsible for starting the fire was still not determined.

Facts concerning the findings of the investigation will not be released except by the District Attorney's Office. The incident remains under investigation. The identity, number of juveniles, motive, ages, and other similar facts will not be released according to laws protecting the accused and juveniles.
