    LONDON, ENGLAND

    TUESDAY 19 JULY

Kentish town – lucky escape for family

A man and woman and their two children were rescued from the second floor of a flat on Leighton Crescent in Kentish Town this morning. Fire broke out in the flat below and investigations suggest it was caused by two tea light candles that had been placed close to a television. The unattended candles quickly set fire to the plastic mouldings of the television, causing fire to spread and damage around 30 per cent of the flat. Kentish Town Station Officer Sean Madeley said: “When we arrived the occupiers of the flat were outside, but we had to help the family living in the flat above to safety via an internal staircase. The woman living in the flat where the fire started was lucky to have woken up at all as there was no smoke alarm fitted in the property. We urge everyone to ensure that candles are placed safely on a heat resistant surface and to fit a smoke alarm, this incident could have been far more serious and the alarm would have raised the alert much earlier.” The Brigade was called at 0530. Fire crews from Kentish Town fire station attended the incident.

    Dagenham – grass fires
Fire crews from Dagenham fire station were called to two separate grass fires on Billet Road and Dagenham Road in Romford yesterday. Firefighters managed to contain both incidents which each involved substantial damage to grass areas. Many grass fires are either started deliberately or happen through careless or thoughtless behaviour such as careless disposal of smoking materials or discarded glass bottles which concentrate the sun's rays. And one of the main problems facing the Brigade is stopping people - mostly children - starting nuisance fires. The Brigade was called to Billet Road at 1117 and Dagenham Road at 1745. Fire crews from Dagenham fire station attended the incidents.
