Saturday 16th July 2005

This hot July day turned into one of the busiest days the LFB has seen in may years. At one point in the afternoon, over half of the Brigade’s Appliances were attending make up (Multi Alarm) incidents and all but 5 of the 168 Pumps were attending calls. Pump from the surrounding county Brigades were also in action in the outer suburbs, a very rare thing in such a large City Fire Brigade. Of a weekend there are less Senior Officers (Chiefs) on duty, every On Duty Chief was assigned to an incident at one point with some make ups having less Chiefs than required until others were released from Other Incidents. Many day Crews on duty since 9am were still on duty late into the evening past the 18:00 shift change as they could not get back to their Stations. Appliances from every corner of London were in opposite corners due to the knock on effect of the many incidents.

F30 Leytonstone 6 Pump Grass Fire 11:29hours.
The first major incident of the day occurred at Wanstead Flats where an adult on a push bike was seen lighting multiple grass fires. This particular fire damaged an area of 5 hectares of grass trees and undergrowth, threatening houses and threatening to jump the road at one point. Crews used 3 Jets, 6 Hosereels via a water shuttle and 6 Beaters to contain the fire.

A40 Hendon 20 Pump Fire Aerial required 13:31hrs
While 8 Pumps and an aerial were still engaged at the site of Thursday’s 30 Pump Fire just along the road at Wembley, a fault in a piece of heavy machinery breaking up a pile of waste timber in a wood yard at Sterling Corner caused a fire in the machine that quickly spread to the tinder dry timber and beyond. Over 120 Firefighters and Officers on 20 Pumps, Rescue, Aerial and Command vehicles tackled the fire in the 150 x 80ft 30ft high stack of timber. The fire also spread to engulf a range of railroad containers used for storage. The Fire was brought under control by Crews using 1 Aerial Monitor, 2 Ground Monitors and 5 hand held jets. A complicated water relay was also put in place from a large water main on the North Circular Road.

G30 Wembley 8 Pump relief at scene of 30 Pump Fire
(See Thursday 14th July)

G39 Feltham 4 Pump Grass Fire 1442hrs
8 hectares of grass damaged 4 jets 4 hosereels

F40 Wennington 4 Pump Grass Fire 1505hrs
5 hectares of grass and undergrowth damaged
2 jets via water relay

G39 Feltham 6 Pump Fire Cylinders Reported 15:39hours
While Feltham crews were fighting a grass fire on their patch, multiple calls were received to a fire in a workshop on Challenge road in Ashford also on their ground. Crews from other Stations, some several miles away, already en-route to cover the area were despatched to the incident. They arrived to find a car repair shop 60 x 30ft 100% involved with several cylinders in the fire. The immediate area was evacuated and covering monitors put in place to tackle the fire and cool the cylinders.

A33 Tottenham 6 Pump Fire
Multiple calls were also being received not long after in London’s flat out Control room to another fire, this time in a junk yard on Durnsford Street in Tottenham. When the crews arrived, including Pumps from stations miles away form this North London district, they found that half of the junk yard a range of portable office Buildings and storage containers and 30 scrap cars were already well alight with approximately 700ft of adjacent Railway embankment involved. The Fire on the railway embankment was contained then crews moved in on the fire in the junk yard extinguishing it using 4 hand held jets. Two Firefighters were removed to Hospital, one after falling down some stairs; the other after hot oil boiled from a burning engine and hit his face.

F43 Barking 4 Pump Fire 16:44hrs
Another pall of Black smoke was soon smudging the blue London skyline. This time at River Road in Barking where a stack of tyres and railway sleepers covering an area of 50 x 50 ft and 50ft high on wasteland was set on fire. 3 Jest were used to bring the fire under Control.

A40 Hendon 4 Pump Fire
Hendon Fire Station saw its second large incident of the day when Firefighters tackling the 20 pump blaze in the timber yard spotted another fire several streets away. The Fire was in a Car repair shop in Brent Street and exhausted Crews arrived to find the 30 x 30 workshop containing 4 motor cars was 100% alight. 2 other cars parked outside were also damaged. Crews wearing BA and using a Thermal image camera controlled the blaze using 4 jets.

The London Fire Brigade received over 1800 fire calls in this 24 hour period, three times the normal rate. The call volume has been at around twice the normal rate for several weeks due to the hot weather and dry conditions, but no one can remember a day when so many fires including so many ‘make up’s were going on at one time. Nevertheless, in the true spirit of the LFB the Crews on the Stations and in Control coped admirably.

Sunday 17th July

Thankfully, although the call rate was still very high on Sunday, apart from the ongoing reliefs at Wembley and Staples Corner, there were only 2 major incidents on the day.

H26 Addington 4 Pump Fire
Crews were called to the Royal Garden Chinese Restaurant on Surrey Hills Road at Sunday Lunchtime. 25% of the two storey 60 x 40 restaurant was alight on the Ground floor and 15% of the roof was also damaged. Crews wearing BA fought the fire with one Hosereel.

F30 Leytonstone 6 Pump Grass Fire 16:21hrs
Wanstead Flats was the scene of another large grass fire on Sunday, this time 8 hectares were damaged and Crews used 6 jets from a water relay to control the fire.

YOUNGSTOWN, OH:

The Message Board of the Youngstown FD web site has an excellent "Apparatus Dictionary". The idea is to have photos of various styles of apparatus posted there so that it can be used as a reference. The photos already in the Apparatus Dictionary vary from early motorized apparatus to new deliveries.

Want to know what a 1939 Ahrens-Fox looks like? How about a Kenworth/Pierce, a Summit tanker or a Seagrave EMS patient transport engine? Don't see a topic for the type of apparatus you're looking for? Start a new category yourself or leave a photo request! Also, if you picture is smaller than 100 kb in size, it can be uploaded and stored on the YFD site.

Look for other features like the Virtual Swap Meet (post a free for sale or wanted ad for fire related item!) and the Fire Alarm Call Box Discussion. There are dozens of photo topics in the call box discussion showing unusual pieces of alarm equipment and photos of towns that are still using their dependable Gamewell systems! Have a picture of your favorite fire station, post it in the Fire Station topic where there old and new photos of stations from coast to coast. Many fire museums have photos and information listed on the site too.

Also, there are incident scenarios and a general firefighting discussion including an interesting new thread on enclosed pump compartments. Want to discuss a fire your town had recently or ask a "how would you do it question"? You can post notices about department fund raising events, parades or other events.

So, why not take a few minutes and have a look at the site? Maybe even register as a member and post a few pictures or comments! Stop in, say Hi! to everyone, and tell us what that nickname of yours means. It's fun and free....

*** FireNet Group Of The Day: ***

CFN, Columbia Fire Net,
is a product of the Columbia, Missouri Fire Department. It was established to provide information via pagers to Chief Officers, Rescue and HazMat Team members and eventually to any interested CFD member. The pagers are provided at no cost to CFD members. With 4 pin options available, members could select any 2 additional types of pages. Obviously their individual pin, then a CFD all call pin and their choice of 2 more. About 2 dozen elected to receive CFN as one of their options. As of this writing there are 4 who are authorized to send out national pages. National paging will remain a very closely held authority. Since we are new, we have a rather steep learning curve. As Fire Chief, Wm. Markgraf is the nominal head of the system. The other 3 "national dispatchers" are employees of the CFD.

The telephone number for the Columbia Fire Department is 573 874 7391.
Home number for Darrin Arends is 573 687 3461.
E-Mail: dwa@gocolumbiamo.com
Personal Pager 499 8686

The CFD Web Page is: http://www.GoColumbiaMo.com which is the citywide page, then select the fire department.

Other dispatchers include Battalion Chief Ron McCord, Lieutenant Steve Sapp, and Engineer Dan McGavick. We sign by CFN/(and then our LAN identifications which is usually our initials.) For "snail mail" communications we may be reached at:

Columbia Fire Department,
201 Orr Street,
Columbia, Missouri 65201.
