LONDON, ENGLAND

WEDNESDAY 20 JULY

Bromley – garden centre blaze

Firefighters are still at the scene of a fire at a garden centre on Oakley Road in Bromley this afternoon. Twelve fire engines and around sixty firefighters tackled the blaze which started in a field next to the centre. Approx 1000 pupils were evacuated from a nearby school and local roads were closed while crews tackled the fire. The blaze has destroyed almost half of the single storey garden centre which was empty at the time. The Brigade was called at 1311 and crews are still at the scene.

THURSDAY 21 JULY

Incidents in London

1600hrs - There are now around forty firefighters and seven fire engines still at the incidents at Shepherds Bush, Warren Street and Oval London underground station, who will remain at the scene on standby to assist police. As a precaution officers have been deployed at Warren Street London Underground Station in full protective equipment in order to carry out an examination of the scene. The police have carried out an initial examination at Oval and early indications show that there is no trace of chemical agents. At this stage there are no reported casualties. People should remain at work or home at this stage and await further information.

Dagenham – grass blaze destroys sheds

Firefighters tackled a blaze in row of sheds on Carrow Road in Dagenham yesterday afternoon. Crews were originally called to a grass fire which quickly spread to the sheds and a terraced house attached. The fire destroyed all five of the sheds as well as five motorbikes being stored inside. A small part of the house was also damaged by the blaze and the cause is still under investigation. The Brigade was called at 1315 and the fire was under control by 1444. Crews from Barking and Ilford fire stations attended the incident.

Cubitt Town – two rescued from flat fire

Two women were rescued by firefighters after a fire broke out in a block of flats on Stewart Street in Cubitt Town yesterday afternoon. Four fire engines and around twenty firefighters tackled the blaze which started on the second floor of the block. The two women were rescued from a first floor window by firefighters using a ladder. They were later taken to hospital suffering from shock and smoke inhalation. The blaze destroyed almost all of the second and third floors of the block and the cause is still under investigation. The Brigade was called at 1409 and the fire was under control by 1457. Crews from Millwall and Bow fire stations attended the incident.

FRIDAY 22 JULY

Bromley – house blaze

Six fire engines and around thirty firefighters tackled a blaze at a three storey house in Bickley Park Road in Bromley this morning. The fire started in the third floor converted roof space of the detached house where two people managed to leave before the Brigade arrived. The fire destroyed the entire top floor and roof and the cause is still under investigation. No smoke alarms were found to be fitted inside the house.

Working smoke alarms give an early warning of fire and help give time which can save lives and prevent injury. The London Fire Brigade carries out home fire safety checks and will fit a free smoke alarm where needed. To make an appointment or for more information call freephone 0800 0 24 48 24. The Brigade was called at 0833 and the fire was under control by 1023. Crews are still at the scene assisting with a full investigation into the blaze.

Islington – man rescued from flat blaze

A man was rescued by firefighters after trying to rescue his pets from a flat fire on Nightingale Road in Islington this morning. The man discovered the fire after returning from a night out and became trapped on the second floor after attempting to rescue the pets before the Brigade arrived. He was helped to safety from a second floor window by crews using a ladder and treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. The blaze destroyed nearly half of the flat and fire investigation officers believe that it started accidentally. The Brigade was called at 0147 and the fire was under control by 0220. Crews from Soho and Islington fire station attended the incident.

If a fire breaks out – get out, stay out and call 999. Don’t tackle the fire yourself or run back into a burning building.

Carshalton – house blaze

Four fire engines and around twenty firefighters tackled a blaze in a house on Ash Close in Carshalton yesterday afternoon. The fire destroyed almost all of the top floor and part of the roof of the two storey house which was empty at the time. The cause of the fire is still under investiogation. The Brigade was called at Wallington and Croydon fire stations attended the incident.
