Kilburn – man rescued from flat fire
A man was rescued by firefighters from a fire in a flat on Carlton Vale in Kilburn this evening. The blaze started in a fourth floor flat within the eighteen storey block of flats. The man was led to safety from the fourth floor by fire crews using the internal staircase. He was later taken to hospital suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. A smoke alarm was found to be fitted inside the flat although the battery had been removed. Smoke alarms save lives. You can now buy one for less than £5 from DIY, electrical or hardware shops, and many now come with a ten year battery life. Remember that a smoke alarm is useless if the battery isn’t working. The blaze destroyed around half of the fourth floor flat and fire investigation officers believe that the fire was started accidentally. The Brigade was called at 2317 and the fire was under control by 2351. A crew from Paddington fire station attended the incident.
Welling – child rescued from house fire
A two-year-old boy was rescued by neighbours after a fire broke out at a house on Downe Close in Welling on Friday evening. The Brigade was called after passers-by saw smoke coming from the semi-detached house. Neighbours managed to rescue the boy from a first floor window before firefighters arrived, and helped a woman leave the ground floor safely. Both were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. The blaze destroyed around a quarter of the ground floor and Fire Investigation Officers believe that the fire started in the kitchen. In London, more than a third of accidental fires in the home start in the kitchen – and nearly all involve the cooker. Never leave a cooker alone when it is switched on, and make sure it is turned off when you have finished using it. The Brigade was called at 2333 and the fire was under control by 2357. A crew from Plumstead fire station attended the incident.
