24 hour shifts VS 10/14 shifts

Looking for info on any "paid" "Fulltime" dept. who work 24 hour shifts? Looking for Pro's and Con's to moving from 10/14's to 24's? also if you do work 24's what is the work table (ie. 1 on -3 off)

Eh there. Our guys went from a 10-12 over to a 24 hour almost a year ago I'd say and they do a 24 on off on off on 4 off, in a 3 platoon system. In fact, the 3 platoon system was the reason we went that route. The guys seem to love it because every day is like a Friday. If you try to lay it out on a calendar to see how it works out, it doesn't work unless you put A shift starting mid week... just a little hint on that.

We work 24/72 here in St John's, as do several other Depts in Canada, including Halifax and Moncton. I don't really see and negatives to this system, other then the fact you only get one full weekend (Fri,Sat,Sun) per month.

Has there been any problems with family trying to get time away on weekends in the summer months? It would seem to me that you may only get one family weekend all summer if the shift falls in the wrong time spots. This could make a spouse pretty upset if he/she works Mon. to Fri.
Can anybody with the real life experience comment on this. My department is looking into this 24 schedule so i would like to know what we are up against.

We work 24 on 48 off. Right now we have five week kelly days, but we are going to three week kelly's...I think in April of next year. As far as days off go, not really a problem. Vacation days are done by time in service and we can have a certain amount off from each BCs/Medics/Officers...not only that but if you need a day off and vacation is full swap time is always an option.

I work a 24 hour on and 48 hour off at the City of Gaffney in South Carolina. As far as I know everyone in South Carolina works 24's and I feel it is a good system. If I take one day off I actually get 5 straight days without work. The only thing negative about 24's is the fact that you are at the station for 24 straight away from family.

Another positive about 24's is the way that our vacation works. In most business' you only get a full month of vacation after about 15 years. In the 24 hour shift system, our department gives you 10-15 days a year depending on your seniority. (10-15 days is a month to month and a half in 24 time) We only work 10-11 days a month so do the math on that one.

The other positive has already been covered by the other letters to you. Swap time is a program you pretty much need for the 24 hour shift to work. You can only allow so many people off but with swap time you can swap an hour out or you can swap a full twenty four hours with an employee on another shift. We have swap time paper work to fill out, where each person signs that they are trading places for the day.

I think your whole crew will be happy with a 24 hour shift it is really a good deal.

I work the (D-10/N-14) 4on-4off system and I like it alot. Y is it that you want a 24hr. Unless your a very busy Department I cant see the 24hr shift being a benefit. Unless you just want the more time off. Any way I know that Niagara falls Fire (canada) work a 24 hr shift..

One question I have yet to hear an answer for is how do the departments provide for relief when crews are getting their asses kicked? At my station we have done 70 calls in a 24 hr period. We work 10 and 14 and it can be painful on a 34 call night. I couldn't imagine 24 hours of that crap.

one month work usually 8 days. 4 platoon system so some months are 7 days.
i have 2 kids both under 5 wife works days and it works perfect for us.
rescue runs approx 3000 calls a year so not much but when i am at other halls that run double that its still a wicked shift

I've been working 24/72 for over 20 years, and i can't find anything negative
towards it. Unless your station averages more than 10 runs a day, you can't beat it.
If you want a week off in the summer, you trade a shift.

We work 24/72 and it's great especially if you want a long weekend you just switch with the opposing shift.

You can get a lot done in your 72 hours off especially around the house.

I'm curious, does anyone have a list of departments working a 24h shift? In both Canada and the US.

I know Toronto and Mississauga are on trial plans, Windsor, Moncton and Halifax work 24h.

Anyone have a list somewhere?

London Ontario has been on 24s from the old 10/14 since 1996. It is definitely the choice of the majority but there are some who hate it. They made the change to save money on staffing for vacation time as they had one shift that spanned 72 hours and one that had 40 hours, but each was considered a shift for vacation purposes. This made it necessary to have staffing levels to accomodate, and the 24's evened things out.

Ok, so i work for a small department that is going through some issues right now and we are looking for solutions. Right now we work 12's. there are only a total of 7 pais staff here including cheif. right now we have just lost a captin and are loosing another engineer. we work with one engineer on from 0700-1900. then the next guy comes on from 1900-0700. The night guy works the dispatch center every night, dispatching for police, fire and ems... we answer the 911, page it out, then we run to the rig and respond and rely on volunteers to show up for assistence.... Not to safe sounding huh...? Anyways the delima we face is because we are short staffed, and we really dont like to dispatch, we wanna get out of it. I thought of working the modified kelly, 24 on,24 off, 24 on,24 off, 24 on, 4 days off. im not sure what sugestions to make to cheif or what options their are....? and we are a fairly busy dept running approx 1500 calls a years. Any suggestions?

We are on 24 off 72 with 2 paid firefighters and a dispatcher per shift.

The dispatcher answers the call from 911 or direct and sends the 2 on duty staff and if more is needed he pages for volunteers.

The dispatcher does not leave his post for 24 hours.

I work at 24/48. I love the extra time off that I didn't have when I was working 12 hour shifts. I wouldn't go back to any other shift other than 24's. My wife might divorce me. A buddy of mine works a modified LA schedule which is 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 48 off, 24 on, 4 days off. He really likes this schedule.
