    Default Sandra Bullock - WAITRESSING!?

    From the Times Argus..

MONTPELIER – Hollywood actress Sandra Bullock was playing the role of cashier Tuesday, and central Vermonters couldn't get enough of the leading lady.

Bullock was in Montpelier to help her sister and brother-in-law, Gesine and Raymond Prado, with the grand opening of their Elm Street confectionary, "Gesine." She packaged pastries, rang up customers, and worked the crowd Tuesday, as Raymond also manned the front of the house and Gesine baked in the back as fast as she could.

The news that a celebrity was in town spread like wildfire, and people interested in catching a glimpse of the actress descended on Gesine like ants on a dropped lollypop. They waited in line, some for more than an hour, to purchase a bakery item and have Bullock ring them out at the cash register.

Though Tuesday's opening was meant to celebrate the arrival of the new store, Bullock's presence captivated central Vermonters, most whom admitted they showed up to see the star, and buy some pastries only as a secondary venture.

Teenage and 'tween girls, boys, adults and even Vermont Mountaineers baseball players waited in line in the hot sun, excitedly whispering to each other about the possibility of seeing Bullock. Friends and coworkers called each other on cell phones, sent text messages and discussed the star's visit at work.

The scene they made outside of Gesine was an unusual one for the nation's smallest capital city, where more than five people in queue at a coffee shop is typically considered a long line.

But those eager to see the actress, whose movies include "Speed" and "28 Days," said the long wait in the hot sun was worth it.

"We came to see Sandra Bullock," said Amber Morse, 18, of Barre. She and her friend Jamie Rossignol, 17, of Williamstown waited in line even after they heard that the shop was mostly out of baked goods.

The last time they heard a movie star was in Vermont was when Jim Carey was around to film "Me, Myself and Irene."

"I want to get a picture with her. I want to get her autograph," Morse said.

But they wouldn't be getting that. Bullock refused to have her picture taken, and declined to sign autographs. She appeared annoyed with the attention from a television news crew and told a Times Argus photographer not to take her picture.

But she did seem to love waiting on customers, as she talked up her sister's baking, joked around with patrons, hugged a couple of teenage girls and even gave out items for free.

"They've been sitting out for a while," Bullock said of some pas-tries. "If I give them to you for free, you can't complain and bring them back."

Even the governor showed up to congratulate the new pastry owner. Gov. James Douglas showed up at the shop after 1 p.m. to wish Gesine Prado well.

Raymond Prado seemed shocked at the outpouring of interest.

"We definitely didn't anticipate this. Gov. Douglas is here, this is ridiculous," he said.

The Vermonters on Tuesday said Bullock lived up to one of her best-known movie titles name – "Ms. Congeniality."

"They gave us the T-shirts for free," said Hollie Fleck, who was walking back toward the center of town after buying a cookie. She was looking at T-shirts with the Gesine logo. "We went up and he (Raymond Prado) goes, 'Are you really gonna wear that?' And I'm like, 'Yeah,' and he's like, 'Well you can have it for free.'"

"She's super friendly and nice," Fleck, of Montpelier, said of Bullock.

Fleck showed up and waited in line to meet the actress after a friend told her Bullock was in town.

"A friend e-mailed me," Fleck said. And she was as quick to share the news as another had been with her. "I've been texting like everybody I know," she said, holding her cell phone.

Others spread the message through the grapevine too.

"I was at my mom's work and a lady that she works with got a phone call saying that Sandra Bullock was in Montpelier," said Jordan Singer of Barre. So Singer and her friend Pam Tessier drove to Elm Street. They said they hoped to get a cookie and an iced coffee.

They may not have been able to get one by the time the teenagers made it inside Gesine. By shortly after noon, most of the baked goods had been sold or given away. Bullock and Ray Prado had given out free samples during the day and gave other foods for free to appease customers who waited in long lines.

Caroline Dellipriscoli, 12, who lives just down the street on Elm, said she and her siblings waited for more than an hour to see Bullock.

"I've seen a lot of her movies. I used to go over my friend's house like every day and we used to watch 'Miss Congeniality,'" Dellipriscoli said. "And I think (the store) turned out really well."

Other area stores were hit with some Sandra-mania as well. People stopped in Matt's Mini Mart, on the corner of Elm and School Streets, to ask for directions to the new bakery.

And Gayle Kramer, who was working at Meadow Mart across the street from Gesine, looked out her window at the long line formed down Elm Street.

"I've been waiting for the line to go down but each time I look out it's longer and longer," Kramer sad. "A girl that works here at night came down on her lunch hour. As far as I know, she's been out there for a good hour. She's not there now, I guess she got in."

The Prados moved here from California last summer. There she was the president and chief executive officer of the film and television company Fortis Films. Not thrilled with the industry or Los Angeles, the couple set their sights on an idyllic setting in the Green Mountain State. She spent a lot of time in Bavaria growing up, which started her affinity for cakes and other baked goods.

They chose Montpelier because of its beauty and its dog-friendly community. And they've spent the past several months renovating the property, which used to house the shop Jabberwocky. Gesine is in the north section of town, in the residential area known as "The Meadow."

Prado has a mail-order business, specializing in macaroons. Celebrity magazines reported that Prado baked cakes for her sister's recent wedding when she married reality-TV star Jesse James earlier this summer.

Paul Clack and Parad Meier, who were among those waiting in line, had a chance to briefly chat with Bullock.

"It's exciting," Clack said. "The coffee's very good and I'm looking forward to the carrot cake."

Barre's Tessier pondered why so many people – possibly hundreds – turned out to try to meet the actress.

"Not that many big movie stars come here, ya know? And it's a small town," Tessier, said.

Sandra Bullock still hasn't lost her charm, or good looks. Plus, she hugs firefighters.

I think that's one of many things that makes her awesome. Instead of suing family members, like other celebs., she auctually gives a crap and is helping em out. Plus she's not too conceited to serve non-celebs. Its nice to know people like this still exist in Hollywood.

I dunno about her taste in men...Jesse "The Tool" James.

I wouldn't turn down a chance to marry Jesse James, I used to think he was really dreamy, so I think her taste in men is fine!

It was good to read a NICE news story for once about a celebrity!!!

I hope their shop will stay as successful as their opening.

For all the life of me, i cant see a firefighter going to hell. At least not for very long. We would end up putting out all the fires and annoying the devil too much.

    Talking Do What?...................

I thought Jesse James was dead. Shot in the back. Remember the line from the song? "The dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard....." What?.... Huh?..... Ohhhh, not THAT Jesse James?........
