    JERSEY CITY, NJ:
    8/3/05 Jersey City 5-5 805

This is a brief preliminary report, as this incident is still active with Eng. Co. 5 and Lad. Co. 12 currently operating. However, at 1644 hours on Wednesday August 3, 2005, a conflagration struck the Greenville section of Jersey City. With the temperature hovering near 95 degrees, a long vacant three story frame building at 107-9 Old Bergen Rd. was completely engulfed in flames upon arrival of Batt. 2, Batt. Chief Charles Donoghue. Fire had jumped both Old Bergen Rd. and Neptune Ave. bringing down a maze of every conceivable wire one would expect to find in an urban neighborhood: primary, secondary and house service electric lines, cable TV lines and telephone lines. Chief Donoghue struck simultaneous 2nd & 3rd Alarms at 1651, a 4th Alarm 3 minutes later, followed by a 5th Alarm at 1715. In that time span, it seemed like the world was on fire, several buildings, telephone poles, storefront signs across Old Bergen Rd., a half dozen cars and even a length of charged 2.5 inch hose were engulfed!

At least ten buildings were damaged, including three that were completely destroyed. Twelve fire fighters were injured, many with heat exhaustion. North Hudson and Bayonne companies responded to the fire. The Gong Club canteen, Car 26, operated for over 8 hours.

    A complete report will follow.

Local residents were evacuated following a blaze under a railway arch in Bycroft Street in Penge yesterday afternoon. The fire caused a gas cylinder being stored under the arch to overheat leading to the possibility that it may explode. As a result fire crews have established a cordon around the immediate area while they work to cool the cylinder. This procedure is expected to take at least 24 hours. Over 100 local residents have been evacuated and rail services were temporarily suspended during the evening. Crews are still at the scene and some traffic disruption is expected throughout the day. The Brigade was called at 1610 and firefighters are still at the scene.

Wood Green Ė chip pan fire
A chip pan is believed to have caused a fire in a block of flats on Partridge Way in Wood Green yesterday afternoon. The blaze started in a flat on the twelfth floor where the residents managed to leave before the Brigade arrived. The fire destroyed around three quarters of the flat as well as causing smoke damage to flats above. Hot fat fires are by far the biggest cause injuries in the home. Donít panic if the pan catches fire and donít move it. If you can, place a damp cloth or towel over the pan to smother the flames. The Brigade was called at 1716 and the fire was under control by 1812. A crew from Hornsey fire station attended the incident.
