    JERSEY CITY, NJ:
    Jersey City 5-5 805 8/3/05

    CONFLAGRATION!

A rarely used word in the modern fire service was the arriving report of Batt. Chief Charles Donaghue, Batt. 2, Jersey City Fire Dept., on the hot, steamy afternoon of Wednesday, August 3, 2005. Box 805 was transmitted at 1644 hours for smoke in the area of Neptune Ave. and Old Bergen Rd. in the Greenville section of the city. Chief Donaghue and the responding assignment arrived to find a chaotic situation that could have quickly destroyed an entire neighborhood without swift and decisive action.

A long vacant three story frame multiple dwelling, 109 Old Bergen Rd., stood at the southwest corner of that intersection. Workers had been spotted in the building, apparently starting renovation work shortly before the outbreak of the fire. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion from an electrical transformer on a utility pole outside the building. At present it is unclear if the fire started from the building and radiant heat blew the transformer or the transformer blew and extended fire to the building. What is clear is that within an instant, the building was completely involved in fire. As Chief Donaghue arrived at 1647 hours, flames had leapt across both Old Bergen Rd. and Neptune Ave., live power lines were dropping on both streets and even the cars parked in front of the building were alight. The Chief excitedly transmitted his first report, "Batt. 2, I have a conflagration. Skip the 2nd and transmit a 3rd Alarm!" First alarm companies were forced to distance themselves from the live power lines dancing and arcing in the street. Lad. Co. 8 stopped short just east of the corner and went immediately into ladder pipe operations. Tower Ladder 4 approached from the west off Kennedy Blvd. and positioned their tower to halt the fire now racing down Neptune Ave. Chief Donaghue again grabbed the radio. "Batt. 2, we have a fireball 35 feet into the air. We have several power lines down and need Public Service Electric here immediately. We have numerous buildings involved. The fire is heading down Neptune Ave. and we have several vehicles involved. Transmit a 4th Alarm!". The time of the 4th Alarm was 1654, a scant 10 minutes from the time out on the Box. The radiant heat was so intense that a charged length of 2 1/2 hose on the east side of Old Bergen Rd. burst into flame, leaving a blackened streak on the sidewalk with 2 couplings at either end!

A 5th Alarm, the fourth in the city's history, was struck at 1716 hours, with Division 1, Deputy Chief Joseph Gallagher now in command, bringing a number of North Hudson companies to the scene. A special call for three additional companies brought Bayonne units to the battle. A recall of off duty personnel, another rare occurrence, was also initiated. Ladder Companies 11 and 9, arriving on the greater alarms, operated their ladder pipes from Neptune Ave. and Old Bergen Rd. respectively. The heavy caliber streams succeeded in cutting off the spread of fire in all directions, but the original fire building was already reduced to a heap of burning lumber. The immediate exposure buildings, 105 Old Bergen Rd., 147 Neptune Ave. (the former home of this author's uncle for many years) and #146, on the opposite side of Neptune Ave., however were all heavily involved. After the bulk of the fire was knocked down by the master streams, companies had to fight their way into each building to complete the control of the fire. The 2 story brick mixed occupancy at 105 Old Bergen Rd. put up quite a fight, with heavy smoke and fire pushing out of the structure for nearly two hours.

The combination of the massive amount of fire and the 92 degree temperature soon took its toll. A total of 12 fire fighters were injured, most for heat exhaustion. The Department's Rehab Unit, the North Hudson RAC Unit, 2 NJ Transit buses and two large misting fans from the Bayonne F. D. were all deployed. The Gong Club canteen, Car 26, was in the center of all this activity to cool down and feed the troops. Ten members responded, serving 300 bottles of water, 2 gallons of coffee (there's always some one who wants mud!), 25 gallons of Gatorade, 135 donuts, 250 cheeseburgers, 250 hamburgers and 50 chicken sandwiches. Car 26 operated for 8 hours and 15 minutes.

When the smoke cleared, eleven buildings and four cars were involved in fire. Structures included:
109 Old Bergen Rd., the building of origin, a 3 story frame vacant multiple dwelling, 30' x 65' (destroyed)
    105 Old Bergen Rd., 2 story brick commercial & dwellings, 35' x 80' (destroyed)
    147 Neptune Ave., 2.5 story frame dwelling 20' x 60' (destroyed)
    146 Neptune Ave., 2 story frame multiple dwelling 30' x 50' (destroyed)
148 Neptune Ave., 2 story brick dwelling 20' x 50', (window frames burned)
    149 Neptune Ave., 2 story frame dwelling 25' x 50' (siding damaged)
161 Neptune Ave., 2.5 story frame dwelling 35' x 65' (front porch damaged)
    173 Neptune Ave., 2.5 story frame dwelling 35' x 70' (roof damaged)
128 Neptune Ave., 3 story frame dwelling 30' x 70' ( west side siding burned)
114 Old Bergen Rd., 2 story brick commercial & dwelling, 35' x 70', ( all windows and frames burned)
116 Old Bergen Rd., 2 story brick commercial & dwelling, 25' x 70' (front sign destroyed)

Miami Valley Breaking News sends out incident notifications of all types of fires, multiple alarm fire, hazardous materials incidents, several different types of EMS incidents, including MVC's with entrapment, MCI's, shootings and stabbings. We have also just begun sending law enforcement incidents, like pursuits, armed robbery and SWAT call-out, to name a few. Our software allows us to send directly to Nextel, Arch Wireless and Ameritech, and to all other wireless devices as an email.

MVBN sends incidents notifications on a county-by-county basis. We have three different groups for each county, which are, fire, EMS and law enforcement, and we also send daytime (7am - 10pm) and nighttime (10pm - 7am) notifications, which allows our members to use a work pager/cell phone to receive information from us, without being disturbed at night.

Our current coverage area includes the following counties in Ohio and northern Kentucky: - Boone (KY), Butler, Campbell (KY), Champaign, Clark, Columbiana, Darke, Delaware, Franklin, Greene, Hamilton, Kenton (KY), Logan, Madison, Mahoning, Miami, Montgomery, Portage, Preble, Trumbull, Union, and Warren. For the counties not listed, we have an "other" group. We also send out Amber Alerts and incoming National incident notifications from other groups around the country.
