    UNITED KINGDOM
    LONDON, ENGLAND

    MONDAY 8 AUGUST

    East Finchley – house fire

Eight fire engines and around forty firefighters tackled a fire in a house on Winnington Road in East Finchley last night. The Brigade was called after neighbours saw smoke coming from the roof of the detached three storey house. The fire destroyed the entire roof and part of the ground floor of the house which was empty at the time. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation. The Brigade was called at 1249 and the fire was under control by 1736. Crews from Hammersmith, Finchley, Harrow and Clerkenwell fire stations attended the incident.

West Ealing – sports pavilion blaze

Ten fire engines and around fifty firefighters are currently tackling a fire in a sports pavilion on Vallis Way in West Ealing. The fire brigade was called after a number of passers-by saw flames coming from the single storey building. Local roads have been closed and traffic disruption during rush hour is expected as crews work to bring the fire under control. The Brigade was called at 1517.

Essex - London Fire Brigade assisting at scrapyard blaze

London Fire Brigade crews are currently assisting Essex firefighters in tackling a fire in a scrapyard at an industrial site on London Road in South Ockendon. Six fire engines and around thirty firefighters are currently assisting with the fire which has caused a number of cylinders to overheat leading to the possibility that they may explode. As a result, a cordon has been established around the area and this is expected to cause some disruption to travel in the area.

    New Addington – man rescued

A man was rescued by firefighters after a blaze broke out in a flat on Lodge Lane in New Addington last night. The fire started in a first floor flat where the man attempted to escape from a balcony. He was helped to safety by fire crews using a ladder and taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. The fire destroyed the entire living room of the first floor flat and is believed to have been started by a discarded cigarette. Smoking causes more than a third of all accidental fire deaths in people’s homes. Never leave a lighted cigarette, cigar or pipe unattended and never smoke in a chair or in bed if you are liable to fall asleep. The Brigade was called at 2133 and the fire was under control by 2207. Crews from Addington and Woodside fire stations attended the incident.

Bethnal Green – blaze in builders yard

Six fire engines and around thirty firefighters tackled a fire in a builder’s yard in Bethnal Green Road in Bethnal Green last night. The fire started in a stack of wooden pallets behind a block of flats where fifty people were evacuated by fire crews. The blaze caused a large amount of damage to the yard as well as a small part of the exterior of the flats. The cause is still under investigation. The Brigade was called at 2232 and the fire was under control by 2357. Crews from Bethnal Green, Shoreditch and Whitechapel fire stations attended the incident.
