ESPN on beach patrol in O.C.

Lifeguard races a part of ‘50 States, 50 Days’
By MICHAEL MILLER Staff Writer, (609) 463-6712, E-Mail
OCEAN CITY - The children who crowded around the ESPN stage Friday to watch the live broadcast of the popular "SportsCenter" show cheered anchorman Scott Van Pelt like he was a rock star.

But for these preteens, Van Pelt has a way better job. He gets to talk about sports every day.

Kyle Gillen, 11, said sports anchor is the coolest job he can imagine.

"They show sports all day," Kyle, wearing a ballcap and T-shirt, said as he craned his neck to see better.

ESPN brought its "50 States, 50 Days" promotion to New Jersey this week, landing in Ocean City for the annual South Jersey Lifeguard Championships.

It was the second straight year that a national sports outlet focused on Ocean City's lifeguard races to highlight sports in New Jersey. Sports Illustrated published a race photo last year in its own 50-states promotion.

The national coverage was public-relations gold for this oceanside resort. The city built a dirt road on the beach to accommodate the heavy trucks and their broadcasting equipment. The crew had its own oceanfront stage overlooking the lifeguard races.

City spokeswoman Michele Berenato noted that Ocean City has a long history of lifeguarding.

"This really represents all that Ocean City is," she said.

When the ESPN broadcast went live from Ocean City, the enthusiastic crowd burst into repeated chants of "E-A-G-L-E-S, EAGLES!" And this being Philadelphia Flyers territory, they booed when the New Jersey Devils were featured as one of the state's pro teams.

Van Pelt dressed for the occasion on the city's 34th Street beach. He sweltered in a button-down shirt, tie and sports jacket, but below the desk, unseen by television viewers, he sported khaki shorts and sandals. A plastic tube pumped chilled air beneath his anchor desk.

Behind him, Anne Kingston, of Lansdowne, Pa., sat on a friend's shoulders with a sign reading "Van Pelt's Vixens." Others made a reference to Eagles receiver Terrell Owens with "Eagles Should Pay T.O. Nothing."

"Our (vacation) place doesn't get ESPN. This has been the worst two weeks of my life," joked Nick Manai, a 14-year-old from Lansdale, Pa., who is spending his vacation in Ocean City. "I don't know what's going on in the world."

As race time approached, the crowd dispersed around the ESPN stage. They knew the real action was in the water.

"Get on it! Get on it! Get a wave!" Ocean City resident John McCann yelled during the photo-finish lifeboat races.

He cheered for Ocean City, but as a former Wildwood lifeguard, his loyalties were divided. McCann said lifeguard races are a good example of the best in New Jersey sports.

"This is true amateur athletics at its best," he said. "These guys all train hard for this. I think people in the Midwest would love this."

For some vacationers, the races were simply a vacation bonus.

"I don't know anything about them," Barbara Hurter, of Pottstown, Pa., said while lounging with some friends in the late-afternoon sun. "The lifeguards look good in their suits, though."
