    Default Chief Reason is Right.

Chief Reason speaks with..well reason when he states that discussions descend into name calling and such. He is right and because I admit that often I am party to that - well - from this post on in deference to civility and those who promote it - I am going to do my best to keep any thread I am participating in from descending into chaos. No one can do much about others but we can do something about ourselves. So I will hold myself in check.

Here is a toast to civility and Chief Reason.

    ~assuming large, booming voice -

Civility Schmility! Back in my day we just fought to the death....sweaty limbs, little wrestling tights, grunts - the winner got to choose the manner of death. And let me tell you - it was no picnic my friend. I've seen things that would make Michael Jackson shudder...

You snot nosed kids nowadays - think you know everything...fighting is good for the soul I say! Ahh. Whatever..I'm quitten this thread, ya hear?!

    Just kiddin Jack, hehehehe!

Default I wasn't singling anyone out.

Really; not any one poster came to mind when I made my comments.
I'll admit that I enjoyed the old days when Mongo, BucksEngine91, me and others would tear up these boards with spirited exchanges on politically-charged topics.
Mongo was the best. If there is ever a Forums Hall of Fame, he would be my first choice. He could engage you in debate, make you think, force you to research and offer you his respect when you could out finesse him with your rebuttals.
Name calling is just too damned easy; it takes away from the discussion and the only thing people visiting these forums can learn from that is that we are not as tight knit of a brotherhood that everyone talks about.
I have been guilty of flaming some posters. I like to think that they deserved it, but who am I to rip on them for their opinion, as misguided as it might be?
We founded the IACOJ on a platform that everyone would be treated with mutual respect. Respectfully agree to disagree.
I know that in the heat of the discussion that the brain lags a little behind the fingers when typing a reply, but that's exactly the time when you should push back from the keyboard, read what you have written and ask yourself, "is this how I would want to be treated"?
Look at the new Forums and just under it, it says "Where Firefighters Connect". I want to believe that it means that we come here to look, listen, learn and to teach each other.
If we can learn to ignore the ones who come here to incite us, then they will take their show down another road.
I realize that we all have a right to defend ourselves and that includes standing up for our principles, but it CAN be done with a modicum of civility.
Everyone of us has that ONE thing in common; a love for the fire service.
The rest just makes it interesting.

    Well Put CR.

Although I don't mind Emberxx's idea either. When two posters have a disagreement, they can settle it in a final cage match to the cyberdeath.

We'll call it Thunderthread, where two posters enter, one poster leaves...

Heck, what happened to Mongo? Last I heard someone else was looking for him but I can't recall the results. This is kinda bad since he is a fellow Texan.

Boy, that's fine treatment I tell ya. What more does a girl have to do than suggest death match wresting (in tights...of course ~grinz)...what, do I have to bring the keg too before I'm forgiven?! All right...if I have to...

Hey; come on. I'm not saying that we have to put skirts on.
I'm saying to give your responses some thought. Throw in some subtlety.
Mix in a dash of sarcasm. You can fashion a response that makes a strong statement without resorting to name calling.
That's really the bummer; the name calling.
If you want to embarrass someone, embarrass them with facts. Force them to spend some time checking their information. When they have to work to keep the debate alive, you'll find out quickly who wants it and who doesn't.
Ever notice how quickly the discussion stops on issues like firefighter safety, but just the mention of Bush or liberal in a sentence will get a thousand replies?
We all know why that is!
More on this phenomenon at IACOJ.

That is true. It also stops on issues where someone reading it could put it in use today.
