Default Female ex-firefighter sues, claiming harassment on job

I've been following this story for a while now since it first came to light about a year ago.

Female ex-firefighter sues, claiming harassment on job

CanWest News Service Friday, August 19, 2005

VANCOUVER -- A former firefighter is suing the City of Richmond over what she claims is a "culture of systemic discrimination and harassment" against female firefighters over the past decade.

In a statement of claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court, Jeanette Moznik cites a series of graphic incidents, some with sexual overtones, she says she suffered from 1997 to 2001.

She says her locker at Hall No. 1 was once broken into with bolt cutters and dry chemical sprayed over the contents.

Another time, the locker was broken into and her work clothes were shredded, forcing her to borrow spares from Jocelyn Roberts, a female colleague who committed suicide earlier this year.

Hardcore pornography was openly displayed in her presence and human feces inserted into both of her boots and her pants and placed beside her allocated spot in the truck bay, she claims.

A condom filled with an unidentified liquid was also placed in her locker and an offensive term for female genitals was written on her locker.

During a fire, she says she was sent inside a structure with Roberts and their water pressure wasn't turned on despite a request to do so. It was later turned on.

In the document, Moznik also alleges that Roberts, a captain in the department, was "repeatedly harassed" during her career as a firefighter. Moznik claims she suffered "nervous shock" and other psychological injuries including depression and finally quit her job in September 2001.

Moznik says she was discouraged from complaining and was told fire officials wouldn't recognize the problems she was having, nor did they have a system to investigate.

In the 24-page statement of claim, Moznik says she became a firefighter at the Vancouver airport in 1993 and problems began for her and other female colleagues in 1995 after the airport service was transferred to the City of Richmond.

If what she says is true, losing their jobs would be the first thing to happen to the person or persons responsible, and the least of their worries. The ones that blew her off should receive no less, if they in fact did nothing. Nobody should go through the stuff in her complaint.

Anything on the city's side of the story or that of the one's she says did this?

This case has been ongoing for just over a year now. The first I heard of it was when they reported that Jocelyn Roberts was on sick leave for stress, followed by the report of her suicide. Moznik's case came to light somewhere in between the two events.

If this is true, since it's alleged, there better be a few people losing jobs.....
