*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

UNITED KINGDOM
LONDON, ENGLAND

THURSDAY 18 AUGUST

Barking – family escape flat blaze

A family of four escaped from a flat fire on Abridge Way in Barking early this morning. The two adults and two children managed to leave their fifth floor flat before the Brigade arrived and were later taken to hospital suffering from shock and smoke inhalation. Fire crews evacuated the occupants from the remainder of the block which had become heavily smoke logged. Four fire engines and around twenty firefighters tackled the blaze which destroyed the entire fifth floor flat. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No smoke alarms were fitted inside the flat. Smoke alarms save lives by providing vital minutes to escape from a fire safely. You can buy one for less than £5 from DIY, electrical or hardware shops, and many alarms now come with a ten year battery life. The Brigade was alled at 0103 and the fire was under control by 0143. Crews from Barking and Dagenham fire stations attended the incident.
