LONDON, ENGLAND

FRIDAY 19 AUGUST

Feltham - five rescued from house blaze

Five people were rescued by firefighters after a blaze broke out in a house on Harlington Road West in Feltham this morning. Neighbours called the fire brigade after smoke was seen coming from the semi-detached house. Firefighters woke the two woman and three men who were asleep inside the house and led them to safety. The fire destroyed just over a quarter of the first floor and is believed to have been started by a candle. Around 2000 house fires a year in the UK are started by candles. Never leave candles or tea lights unattended and place them on a flat heat-resistant surface such as a ceramic plate. Keep them away from draughts and anything that could catch fire such as curtains and furniture. The Brigade was called at 0258 and the fire was under control by 0327. A crew from Feltham fire station attended the incident

LOS ANGELES, CA:
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INCIDENT IN CIVIC CENTER AREA:

On Friday, August 19, 2005, at 9:59 AM PDT, Seven Companies of Los Angeles firefighters, 6 LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one LAFD Hazardous Materials Task Force, and two Chief Officer Command Teams under the direction of Assistant Chief Michael Fulmis responded to a Hazardous Materials Investigation at 251 South Olive Street in the Civic Center area. Quickly arriving first units discovered several patients, suffering various injuries related to inhalation of a toxic substance. Upon further investigation, it was ascertained that a hotel janitor mistakenly commixed two commonly used detergent-type materials, which inadvertently produced a Chlorine gas in the laundry room of the “Omni Hotel”. Utilizing equipment and the expertise of the specially trained members of the LAFD Hazardous Materials Task Force, the situation was determined to be static. Four adults were immediately treated and transported to area hospitals. A secondary exploration of the building produced two more adults with related symptoms; both were transported for further examination. The Los Angeles County Health Department was summoned to the scene and expeditiously determined the Hotel to be safe for occupants.
