Default how does a department become a local in the iaff

I work for a small combination (vol/career) department. We are wondering how to become part of the IAFF and, the requirments to become a union local? Any information would be helpful.

We currently have 4 full time firefighters and 2 full time Lts.

Contact the IAFF. They will guide you on what has to be completed to join.

Try this link and see if may be of some assistance.

Get in touch with your state association. They will be a huge asset.

Do you have a Local near by? A larger city that is IAFF? The reason I ask is if you do I would ask if you can join into their local. One main reason is money, as a small Local one legal battle could bankrupt your local, if you were a part of a larger local there are more assets available.

I don't really agree with the leaching theory. If a small local was attached to mine and they had a large scale legal issue (requiring money) - it would create some pretty big hostility issues between the departments. Remember this local will only be paying a minuscule amount of dues but taking away much, much more.

Their best bet would be to form their own local and use a state association for direction and representation on large issues.
