Does size matter?
Now that I have your attention.....Long and thin is in!
Skinny firefighter slithers to the rescue
WESTFIELD, N.J. (AP) - Good things sometimes come in small
Such is the case for a 160-pound firefighter in Westfield.
Jim Pfeiffer's beanpole status came in handy when the
25-year-old slipped into a narrow crevasse to rescue a toddler
trapped nine feet underground on Monday.
The 16-month-old Metuchen boy had slipped into a hole dug by a
contractor to support new floodlights at Tamaques Park.
A concrete column took up most of the space. But John
Butterfield fell into a ten-inch gap, pressing his face against the
Colleagues fastened ropes around Pfeiffer's waist and ankles,
and lowered him headfirst into the gap. Pfeiffer soon became wedged
But the firefighter managed to grip the child's shirt, and then
slip his fingertips under the boy's armpits. His colleagues hoisted
them to freedom.
The infant was treated for cuts and bruises.
