On many badges there is a center crest. There are many formats, One has an item that is a circle on the end of a pole. Does anyone know what it is?

Center "scramble"
Yeah, many badges have the standard Fire Service "scramble". But there are other symbols out there. Can you direct me to a pic of what you describe?

I believe it is a fire lantern on a pole. In the 1800's, a boy would run ahead of the hand-drawn apparatus with the lantern lighting the way.

Sounds like you are describing the torch. They used this to light the street lights and to light the way to the scene.
