Hoboken, NJ: 3rd Alarm

Saturday August 27. 2005 Hoboken (Hudson) NJ @ 15:15 hours Hoboken Fire Dispatch started to received numerous calls reporting a fire on Willow between 2nd and 3rd. Units arriving found heavy black smoke from the roof area of 217 Willow. A 2nd and 3rd alarm was ordered within minutes and a request of contact Jersey City and have M/A come into Hoboken and directly to the scene. Units reached the roof 217 Willow to find fire involving a rooftop deck across 217 - 221 Willow of 3, 4 stry Brick buildings , units stretched and operated 4 lines to the roof as it was impossible to get a ladder co to put a ladder to the roof due to electrical lines in the new "Soho Suburb" of Manhattan. Units were wiped out fast due to the late summer sun and heat. The fire was knocked down in approximatly 45 minutes. During the early moments of this fire, Jersey City Fire Dispatch received and sent out full box assignments to the Heights area of the city as smoke was billowing into that area from this fire. Fire investigators determined that workers were making repairs to the roof and caused this fire which was deem accidential. This was a far cry from the late 70's and early 80's when a working fire in Hoboken was an automatic all hands go in the buff community as this town was going through urban renewal to suburban paradise, any buff familiar with Hoboken during this time will be sure to have a story about the best little Fire Department in the country. During this time this Fire Department operated 6 engines and 3 truck companies. At this time this Department operates 3 engines and 2 truck companies with North Hudson and Jersey City being the 3rd alarm companies. Not many fires take place in the current day Hoboken but in my experience some of the best fires I have seen have taken place in this town.
